En ekspedition til Mars går galt, da astronauten Mark Watney bliver fanget i en voldsom storm. Hans kolleger tror, at han er død, og de rejser tilbage til Jorden uden ham, men Mark har overlevet og er nu strandet alene på den ugæstfri røde planet. Han må klare sig med et minimalt forråd og bruge al sin energi og forstand på at finde en måde at overleve på.
