En bemandet mission til Mars går galt, da en af astronauterne, Mark Watney, fanges i en storm og formodes død. Hans kolleger vender tilbage til Jorden, men Mark har overlevet og er nu mutters alene på Mars. Han må forsøge at klare sig på skibets minimale forråd og bruge al sin energi og snilde på at finde ud af, hvordan han får skabt kontakt til NASA, så han kan komme hjem igen.
