Hi! TMDB seems to have added a new section on each film: ORIGIN COUNTRY. The problem is that it's by default UNITED STATES on all films... Could it feeds from the PRODUCTION COUNTRIES when there is only one? To help us.

Hi @dranodrinker, it doesn't default to the US for all movies, but rather the default country for the "original language". Unfortunately, there was no 100% reliable way to get a value in there that could have matched all the edge cases. Production countries would have also presented there own set of challenges. I debated between which to use for a while but decided to lean into the language field.

I even considered importing this field from Wikidata or something but 6/8 movies I looked up were wrong so I didn't feel like that was a reliable solution for this field either. Bottom line, being right ~75% of the time is better than 0%.

Best thing to do for now is to just edit all the films you come across, and I'm sure within a few weeks we'll be in much better shape.

yeah I don't really like this new feature. All canadian and UK movies are 'wrong' in this case now. But its not a big problem. I don't understand why we need it though.

@travisbell is it an idea by changing all "orgin country - fields" of movies with Canada and/or UK or(..) as production country added to their specific country/countries by the bot?

For example

  • 'movie 1' has united kingdom as production country added -> orgin country should be changed to UK then
  • 'movie 2' has Austria and UK as Production country -> orgin country should be changed to UK and AUT then
  • 'movie 3' has nothing as Production country -> no change(so US remains which in the most cases might be correct anyway)
  • 'movie 4' has Germany as Production country -> no change because we dont care, the original language solution solved it here.

The bot should be only interested in changing the orgin country of movies with production countries like Ausria, UK or Canada. If a change is not doable even a deletion would be better than just leaving it that way imo. Can the bot be used for things like that? I see a logic there which probably could be programmed but I absolutely do not now how to.

After all we have two fields with the same information -> So why do we even need it? As said before I don't really see the use.

Sure, I can think about this. Give me a bit of time to think on it.

The origin country field is not the same as production country. It has been present on TV since 2015 or so. The introduction of the origin country field on movies is intended to bring field parity between TV and movie data and designed to indicate where a movie is originally released. This has generally nothing to do with the production countries (point is, although they are the same sometimes, they are certainly not all the time).

Hi @King_Dave, there, I think a number of countries are in better shape now. Let me know if you see a country that needs some special treatment.

Yeah it's much better now. That was fast! Thank you!

I just found another minor issue: When for example Hong Kong is a production country and chinese the original language we have both, china and Hong Kong SAR China entered as origin countries now. Is it possible to delete origin countries like usa, china, germany if they're not added as productrion country but others(like hong kong, Austria,..) are? I think this would make the entries even better.

All Taiwanese films now getting ‘China’ added as origin countries just because they’re in ‘Chinese’ (which should be changed to ‘Mandarin’ anyway)… yikes

I just applied some more tweaks to the entries containing Hong Kong and Taiwan as an origin country.

@travisbell on which API we can get origin country info?

For Series in the answer we have the item

origin_country
0 "XX"

For Movies I think it hasn't been implemented yet.

@ticao2 @travisbell thanks for the update, is it available for TV shows?

As I mentioned over there, you cannot make rules by reinventing the English language. Origin has to do with place of birth and this is the only internationally accepted interpretation. There isn't any other unless you come from a different planet and you don't understand the basics. Therefore, origin has to do with the companies that created ("gave birth") each production. Nothing more, nothing less.

With all due respect, you're just making up your own arbitrary rules. (And "origin" can have may other meanings besides "place of birth.") This website can use "origin" however they wish as long as they define their terms, which they have clearly done, and their usage is reasonable, which it is.

It would be fine to have a (clear) rule in the bible how to fill ORIGIN COUNTRY.

Arbitrary? ""Origin" can have may other meanings"? Really? On which vocabulary of which language? When someone have to answer the question "Where this film originated?" your answer should reference to the country that was premiered?
