Gigliola Cinquetti (born Giliola Cinquetti on 20 December 1947) is an Italian singer, songwriter, and television presenter.

Gigliola Cinquetti was born into a wealthy family in Verona. From the ages of 9 to 13, she studied and took piano lessons, taking exams in music theory. She loves painting and art. Her career as a professional singer began when she was 16.

At the age of 16 she won the Sanremo Music Festival in 1964 singing "Non ho l'età" ("I'm not old enough"), with music composed by Mario Panzeri and lyrics by Nicola Salerno. Her win enabled her to represent Italy in the Eurovision Song Contest 1964 in Copenhagen with the same song, where she claimed her country's first ever victory in the event. Cinquetti became the youngest winner of the contest, aged 16 years and 92 days. Only one younger artist has triumphed since: Sandra Kim in 1986.

The song became an international success, even spending 17 weeks in the UK Singles Chart and ending the year as the 88th best-selling single in the U.K. in 1964, something highly unusual for Italian-language material. It sold over three million copies, and was awarded a platinum disc in August 1964. In 1966, she recorded "Dio, come ti amo" ("God, How I Love You"), which became another international hit.

One of her other songs, "Alle porte del sole" (released in 1973), was re-recorded in both English (as "To the Door of the Sun") and Italian by Al Martino, two years after its initial release; "To the Door of the Sun" reached No. 17 on Billboard's Hot 100 in the United States. Cinquetti's own English version of the song was released as a single by CBS Records in August 1974, with her original 1973 Italian version on the B-side.

Cinquetti returned in the Eurovision Song Contest 1974, held in Brighton, where she again represented Italy. Performing the song "Sì" ("Yes"), the music and lyrics of which were written by Mario Panzeri, Daniele Pace, Lorenzo Pilat and Carrado Conti, she came second with 18 points after "Waterloo", sung by Sweden's ABBA, who won with 24 points. The live telecast of her song was banned in her home country by the Italian national broadcaster RAI, as the event partially coincided with the campaigning for the 1974 Italian divorce referendum which was to be held a month later in May. RAI censored the song because of concerns that the name and lyrics of the song (which constantly repeated the word 'Sì') could be accused of being a subliminal message and a form of propaganda to influence the Italian voting public to vote 'Yes' in the referendum. The song remained censored on most Italian state TV and radio stations for over a month. Cinquetti later recorded versions of the song in English ("Go (Before You Break My Heart)"), French ("Lui"), German ("Ja") and Spanish ("Si"). The English-language version reached number 8 in the UK Singles Chart in June 1974.

Gigliola Cinquetti, née le 20 décembre 1947 à Vérone, est une chanteuse, actrice et animatrice de télévision italienne. Elle a remporté le Concours Eurovision de la chanson pour l'Italie, en 1964, avec la chanson Non ho l'età.

Gigliola Cinquetti naît dans une famille fortunée et d'ascendance noble. Son père, Luigi, est architecte. Sa mère, Sara, est femme au foyer. Elle a une sœur: Rosabianca.

À cinq ans, Gigliola fait sa première expérience théâtrale: elle interprète la Vierge Marie dans une pièce de son école. Ses parents découvrent très tôt son talent musical et l'encouragent dans cette voie, lui payant des cours de solfège et de piano.

À douze ans, Gigliola commence sa carrière de chanteuse et se produit en amatrice au théâtre Ristori de Vérone. Elle poursuit en parallèle sa scolarité à l'École des Arts de Vérone, dont elle sort diplômée en chant et solfège. Elle obtient également son agrégation de l'enseignement, puis entame des études en architecture, avant de se réorienter vers la philosophie.

En 1963, Gigliola participe au Festival des Nouvelles Voix de Castrocaro, qu'elle remporte avec Le strade di notte (Les rues, la nuit), une chanson écrite par Giorgio Gaber. Elle signe dans la foulée son premier contrat d'enregistrement avec la compagnie CGD et publie son premier 45 tours.

En 1964, Gigliola participe pour la première fois au Festival de Sanremo. Elle concourt de concert avec Patricia Carli. Toutes deux interprètent Non ho l'età, une chanson de Nicola Salerno et Mario Panzeri. Ensemble, elles remportent le Festival, mais c'est Gigliola qui est choisie par la télévision publique italienne pour la représenter à la neuvième édition du Concours Eurovision de la chanson.

Le samedi 21 mars 1964, à Copenhague, Gigliola remporte le Concours Eurovision pour l'Italie. Elle devient la première et seule artiste de l'histoire du concours à être autorisée à remonter sur scène pour saluer une seconde fois le public. En effet, après sa prestation, le public danois l'applaudit de façon si marquée et si prolongée, que la production lui permit de revenir s'incliner à nouveau.

Ce fut la première victoire de l'Italie au concours. Il s'agit toujours de la plus écrasante de toutes les victoires, l'Italie remportant 2,88 fois plus de votes que le Royaume-Uni, une proportion toujours inégalée.

Non ho l'età rencontra un immense succès commercial partout en Europe, une première dans l’histoire du concours. La chanson se vendit à quatre millions d'exemplaires et offrit à Gigliola la possibilité d'enregistrer son premier album. La chanson fut reprise en français par Patricia Carli sous le titre Je suis à toi.

Gigliola, qui était alors âgée de seize ans, demeura la plus jeune gagnante de l'histoire du concours, jusqu'en 1986. Cette année-là, elle fut détrônée par la Belge Sandra Kim, qui remporta la victoire à l'âge de treize ans.

En 1965, Gigliola revient concourir à Sanremo avec la chanson Ho bisogno di vederti (J'ai besoin de te voir) de Piero Ciampi et termine à la cinquième place. La même année, elle donne son premier concert à l'Olympia. ...
