Renato Berta

Biography

Renato Berta is a Swiss cinematographer and film director, best known for his collaborations with directors Alain Tanner and Jean-Marie Straub. Trained at the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia in Rome, Berta has worked as cinematographer in more than 100 films since 1969. He won a César Award for Best Cinematography for Au revoir les enfants in 1988 and a David di Donatello for Best Cinematography for Noi credevamo in 2011.

In 2013, he was awarded the Chevalier of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres.

Renato Berta, né le 2 mars 1945 à Bellinzone, est un directeur de la photographie suisse.

Il suit les cours du Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia de Rome entre 1965 et 1967 avant de commencer sa carrière de chef opérateur en collaborant avec des réalisateurs de la nouvelle vague suisse (Alain Tanner, Francis Reusser, Michel Soutter ou Daniel Schmid). Apprécié pour son sens aigu du cadrage et son exploitation fine de la lumière, Renato Berta privilégie le cinéma d'auteur à partir des années 1980, travaillant notamment pour Jean-Luc Godard, Jean-Marie Straub et Danièle Huillet, Patrice Chéreau, André Téchiné, Louis Malle, Alain Resnais, Manoel de Oliveira, Claude Chabrol, Robert Guédiguian, Amos Gitaï ou encore Jean-Henri Roger.

En 2011, la Cinémathèque Française organise un cycle de films en son honneur intitulé Hommage à Renato Berta. Une «rétrospective Renato Berta» est programmée à la Cinémathèque de Toulouse en janvier 2022.
