Gladys George, nascuda Gladys Clare Evans (Patten, Maine, 13 de setembre de 1904 – Los Angeles, Califòrnia, 8 de desembre de 1954), va ser una actriu teatral i de cinema. Tot i que va ser nominada a l’Oscar a la millor actriu pel seu paper a la pel·lícula “Valiant Is the Word for Carrie” (1936), fou coneguda sobretot pels seus papers com a actriu de repartiment.

George went on the stage at the age of 3 and toured the United States, appearing with her parents. She starred on stage in the 1920s, although she had made several films in the early part of that decade. She starred in Personal Appearance, a comedy by Lawrence Riley. This role was reprised by Mae West in the classic film, Go West, Young Man, which West adapted from the play. In 1936 George was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress for Valiant Is the Word for Carrie.

George's Broadway credits include The Distant City, Lady in Waiting, and The Betrothal.

Her only other first billed roles were in Madame X (1937) and Love is a Headache.[6] She also appeared in The Roaring Twenties (1939), The Way of All Flesh (1940), The Best Years of Our Lives (1946) and He Ran All the Way (1951). She played the widow of Miles Archer (Iva Archer) in The Maltese Falcon and Mme. Du Barry in Marie Antoinette.

Her last successful roles were as Lute Mae Sanders in Flamingo Road, her brief appearance as the corrupt nurse Miss Hatch in Detective Story, and Lullaby of Broadway as the alcoholic mother of Doris Day's wholesome character.

Su verdadero nombre era Gladys Anna Clare, y nació en Patten, Maine. George trabajó en el teatro en la década de 1920, y así mismo actuó en varios filmes.

Ganó fama gracias al enorme éxito en Broadway de la obra Personal Appearance, la comedia escrita por Lawrence Riley en la cual la actriz interpretaba el papel principal. Este papel fue interpretado por Mae West en el film Go West, Young Man, adaptación de la obra teatral.

Además, en 1936 fue nominada al Oscar a la mejor actriz por su interpretación en Valiant Is the Word for Carrie.

Entre otros filmes actuó en Madame X (1937), Los violentos años veinte (1939), The Way of All Flesh (1940), The Best Years of Our Lives (1946) y He Ran All the Way (Yo amé a un asesino) (1951). Su interpretación más recordada es, posiblemente, la de la esposa de Miles Archer en El halcón maltés.

Estuvo casada en cuatro ocasiones. Sus cuatro esposos fueron: el actor Ben Erway (1922 – divorciados en 1930); Edward Fowler (1933 – divorciados en 1935); el actor Leonard Penn (1935 – divorciados en 1944); Kenneth Bradley (1946- divorciados en 1950).

George falleció a causa de una hemorragia cerebral en 1954 en Los Ángeles, California. Está enterrada en el Cementerio Pierce Brothers Valhalla Memorial Park de Hollywood, California.
