Joep is geboren op 28-3-1960 te Amsterdam en groeide op in Schalkwijk (Haarlem) met 2 broers en 2 zussen en vanaf zijn 6e zonder vader, maar met een fantastische moeder. Joep was een beetje een huilebalk, maar die emotionele gevoeligheid heeft hij later weten te gebruiken bij het componeren van gevoelige melodietjes. Basketbal was jarenlang zijn belangrijkste religie. Shooting forward met net te weinig talent en lengte (1,86m) voor de top.

Op elf-jarige leeftijd leerde Joep zichzelf gitaarspelen en hij ziet dat nog steeds als de bepalende factor voor zijn uiteindelijke loopbaan, die met veel omwegen en schijnbewegingen zijn huidige maar nog steeds grillige vorm heeft.

Joep kwam via een carriere als gymleraar en docent privaatrecht terecht in het theater met NUHR en de Ploeg. De vriendschap met Peter Heerschop, die bij hem in de klas op de Academie voor Lichamelijke Opvoeding zat, en Viggo Waas, twee jaar daaronder, legde het fundament voor zijn verdere carriere. In november 2017 vierde NUHR haar (zijn?) 30-jarig jubileum. NUHR won tot twee keer toe de Poelifinario voor beste theaterprogramma. De laatste jaren werkt hij vooral samen met Rob Urgert aan diverse tv-programma's zoals de Kwis, Het Instituut, Wie denk je wel dat je bent? en ontwikkelden zij diverse tv-formats, boeken en events. Daarnaast schreef Joep een aantal jeugdboeken, een reisverhalenboek en boeken met verzamelde columns en was hij 5 jaar lang presentator van Discovery's 'How do they do it?' dat tot in de eeuwigheid herhaald zal worden. Een kortstondige deelname aan 'Wie is de Mol' in 2012 mag niet onvermeld blijven

Joep is gelukkig getrouwd en heeft twee fantastische zoons

At the age of eleven, Joep taught himself to play the guitar and he still sees this as the determining factor for his eventual career, which has taken its current but still erratic form with many detours and feints.

Joep ended up in the theater with NUHR and de Ploeg through a career as a gym teacher and private law teacher. The friendship with Peter Heerschop, who was in his class at the Academy for Physical Education, and Viggo Waas, two years below him, laid the foundation for his further career. In November 2017, NUHR celebrated its (its?) 30th anniversary. NUHR won the Poelifinario for best theater program twice. In recent years he has mainly worked with Rob Urgert on various TV programs such as the Kwis, Het Instituut, Who do you think you are? and they developed various TV formats, books and events. Joep is happily married and has two fantastic sons
