K tomu si museli navzájem posílat zprávy prostřednictvím důvěryhodných agentů, odsunout na vedlejší kolej ty, kteří se na obou stranách takovému sblížení bránili, a přemýšlet, zda ten druhý neblafuje. On 23 August 1939, the world was shocked to discover that Hitler and Stalin, the most intractable of their enemies at the time, had signed a pact that allowed them to divide Poland between them and gave the Nazi leader complete freedom to concentrate his forces in the West, against France and the United Kingdom. Through this agreement, Europe was to be thrown into war. For a long time, the relationship between Hitler and Stalin was ignored: their mutual fascination, their moves to get closer, the marks of confidence they exchanged and all the benefits they derived from the German-Soviet pact, before resuming their war to the death in June 41 with the "Barbarossa" operation.

Le 23 août 1939, le monde découvre avec stupeur qu'Hitler et Staline, les plus irréductibles des ennemis d'alors, ont signé un accord. Un pacte qui leur permettait de se partager la Pologne et qui donnait toute liberté au chef nazi de concentrer ses forces à l'Ouest, contre la France et le Royaume Uni. Par cet accord, l'Europe va être précipitée dans la guerre. Avec le pacte germano-soviétique, Staline et Hitler ont mis de côté toute logique politique pour laisser croire aux démocraties occidentales qu'un tel rapprochement était impossible et finalement concilier l'inconciliable.
