故事发生在奥地利维也纳，丘托克（阿道夫·门吉欧 Adolphe Menjou 饰）虽然迎娶了年轻美貌的妻子米琪（玛丽·普雷沃斯特 Marie Prevost 饰），但他的婚姻生活却并不幸福，因为米琪是一个水性杨花的女人，结婚没多久就移情别恋了。米琪喜欢的是自己的好友夏洛特（Florence Vidor 饰）的丈夫弗兰茨（蒙蒂·布卢 Monte Blue 饰），对他百般引诱，而丘托克决定将此作为提出离婚的绝佳契机，于是雇佣了私家侦探（哈利·迈耶斯 Harry Myers 饰）想要得到米琪出轨的证据。

夏洛特当然明白米琪的狼子野心，于是对她处处提防，而因为米琪的介入，她和弗兰茨之间的感情也渐渐出现了裂痕。终于，在一次激烈的争吵后，弗兰茨选择了离家出走。

Professor Stock and his wife Mizzi are unhappily married. The professor, suspicious of his wife, hires a detective to spy on her in hopes of obtaining a divorce. Mizzi sets her sights on seducing Dr. Franz Braun, the new husband of her good friend Charlotte. Dr. Braun's colleague, Dr. Mueller, who has his eye on Charlotte, sees this as his opportunity. Through a misunderstanding, Charlotte thinks that her husband is interested in Miss Hofer, and asks Mizzi to keep him occupied... around and around the circle goes in Lubitsch's refined comedy of mistaken infidelity.

Mary Pickford holte Lubitsch nach seinem internationalen Erfolg mit Madame Dubarry von Berlin nach Hollywood. Mit “Die Ehe im Kreise” schuf er dort ein Beispiel für ein neues Genre, das die Amerikaner “Sex Comedy” nannten, und Lubitsch sollte nie wieder in Europa arbeiten. Verwechslungen, Täuschungen, Rollentausch, überraschende Wendungen: In dieser “Sex Comedy” finden sich alle Zutaten des Vaudeville, bemerkenswert interpretiert von den großen Stars der Epoche in einer umwerfenden Inszenierung. Tra i quattro si scatenano ambigui rapporti incrociati, con Mizzi che cerca di portare via all’amica il marito mentre Stock assolda un detective per coglierla in flagrante e poter così divorziare…

El profesor Stock y su mujer Mizzi siempre están peleándose. Mizzi trata un día de de seducir al Dr. Franz Braun, el nuevo marido de su buena amiga Charlotte. Un colega del Dr. Braun, el Dr. Mueller, que está enamorado de Charlotte, ve este flirteo de Mizzi como una buena oportunidad para él, aunque Franz y Charlotte son un matriminio felizmente casado. Por un malentendido, Charlotte piensa que su marido está interesado en la Srta. Hofer, y piede a Mizzi que le mantenga ocupado. Mientras, el profesor Stock comienza a sospechar de su mujer, y contrata a un detective para que la espíe, con la esperanza de obtener pruebas para un divorcio.
