Couple of years ago Aubrey raved about the Swedish movie she liked, Border. And I agree with her completely, that was absolutely brilliant and excellent film. I guess watching great movies and getting more mature pushed her to look for more serious roles, to show acting skills and not be a walking jester as she's done in so many movies before. And she has some nice potential, she did very well in Legion and Ingrid Goes West, didn't have a chance to see Black Bear yet. But the direction is clear and it's a very good choice for her. Emily the Criminal is her another fine display of a more complex character, more complex situation. The movie is well written and filmed in a very French way, sort of Jacques Audiard's style. Aubrey gives more than enough for this role and it shows. It is still not a top notch, breath taking performance of Emmanuelle Devos in Audiard's Read My Lips, but very good nonetheless. The last act is a bit weaker as the plot needs to be resolved and the script almost goes off the rails, but then the ending covers it nicely and overall leaves a good impression.
Well done and a good job for a noob director. I see that in his next movie he cast Mel Gibson and Shia LaBeouf. Risky move there, but hopefully that cast will not end his career earlier than expected.

There hasn't been anything written about this movie since 2019 (except for a tweet on twitter a year ago that basically said the same things).
