Discuss The Grocer's Son

I dunno if it's just me being American but movies like this, set in provincial European towns with no connection to the modern world, are really fun to watch.

This movie is especially effective in the way it bridges the gap between modern life & dreamland. It begins with Antoine stuck in city life with no real identity. Notice the opening chaotic scenes are all shot from behind him, we don't see his face until later, and even then he's completely emotionless, dehumanized & unlikeable. Begrudgingly he goes out to the country and at first he hates everyone just as they reject him. The plot might be simple, but the fun is seeing if/how he finds his identity. The acting is top notch with a lot of the old timers played by classic French actors from the 70s.

I haven't seen too many like this but these are my top picks. Can anyone suggest more like these?

  1. The Grocer's Son
  2. Four Last Songs
  3. Under the Tuscan Sun

Disqualified on a technicality - The 4th Tenor with Rodney Dangerfield. Wonderfully charming scenes of Italian wine country, except that it was all filmed in California 😬
