France, 1815. After his defeat at Waterloo, Napoleon heads for exile. Royalists occupy Paris and attempt to restore the monarchy. However, the battle doesn't seem to be over. On July 6, Talleyrand, a shrewd politician of flexible convictions, invites chief of police and zealous revolutionary Fouché to supper and tries to convince him to serve the king. Over the meal they insult each other, accuse each other, and, at first sight, look like mortal enemies. But they definitely have one thing in common: they are both power-hungry.

France, 6 juillet 1815. Alors que le peuple se pose de sombres questions sur son avenir après la défaite de Waterloo, deux hommes soupent à huis clos, Talleyrand et Fouché. Ils vont se livrer a un duel verbal dont l'enjeu est l'avenir de leur pays.

Frankreich im Jahre 1815: Nach seiner Niederlage in Waterloo geht Napoleon ins Exil. Royalisten besetzen Paris und versuchen, die Monarchie wiederherzustellen. Am 6. Juli lädt Talleyrand, ein opportunistischer Politiker, den eifrigen revolutionären Polizeichef Fouché zum Abendessen ein und versucht ihn zu überzeugen, dem König zu dienen. Beim Essen beleidigen sie sich gegenseitig und sehen auf den ersten Blick wie tödliche Feinde aus. Aber sie haben definitiv eines gemeinsam: Sie sind beide machtgierig.

Siamo a Parigi nel 1815. Dopo la caduta di Napoleone si devono decidere le sorti politiche della Francia. Talleyrand organizza un incontro a cena con Fouché, capo del governo provvisorio. I due sono eterni rivali e giostrano un duello con le parole, i ricordi e la politica. Il primo vuole il salvacondotto per Luigi XVIII, il secondo mantenere il proprio potere. Arriveranno a un'intesa anche se il nascente regime non promette niente di nuovo. Si tratta di una grande prova d'attori accompagnata dalla regia asciutta e teatrale di Molinaro ( Il vizietto).
