Discuss American Fable

This was an interesting film, and its a shame it doesn't appear to have garnered much attention. Albeit clearly low budget, I felt it constructed its story very creatively and was an engrossing and intriguing watch. That said, some of the performances were really sub par. Rusty Schwimmer as Ethel - I mean, it's a difficult thing to say lines aloud when you're by yourself because it's quite unnatural, so arguably she was left hanging with some dodgy scripting, but even so, I wasn't even a tiny bit convinced by her. And whilst she's the easiest to pick on, I actually felt Richard Schiff and Peyton Kennedy were pretty much the only two in the cast who really nailed their performances, and Kip Pardue did alright. What did you guys make of the acting?

I agree about the acting. I also thought Schwimmer's acting was the worst, but that some of it could be excused due to the awkward script.

I was pretty disappointed by the film, to be honest. I expected there to be more fantasy, but what little amount there was felt random and not very well integrated into the story.

I've seen people online saying the film looks like Pan's Labyrinth, but overall, I thought it was more similar to the 2003 Italian film I'm Not Scared.

Agreed, the performances were very bad. The exceptions were Peyton Kennedy as the girl, Gitty and Richard Schiff, as the captive. Schiff was okay, but Kennedy was slightly above average in my eyes. She played her part as the lead character fairly well.

Performance by the brother was the worst, in my opinion.

The movie itself plot-wise was okay. I saw the central theme as the differences in socioeconomic status on parental upbringing. The movie "Blue is the Warmest Color" actually had a very similar theme as one of its themes (I wouldn't call it the central theme). Ofcourse, Blue is the Warmest Color is a far superior and more complex movie and it executes this particular theme flawlessly (albeit that movie is way different and it's more for adults).
