Dutch painter Jan-Van Rooyer hurries to keep a rendezvous with Jacqueline Cousteau, an elegant, sophisticated Frenchwoman, slightly his elder, whose relationship with him had turned from art student into one of love trysts. He arrives and is confronted by Detective Police Inspector Morgan who accuses him of having murdered Jacqueline. Morgan listens sceptically to the dazed denials of Van Rooyer as he tells the story of his relationship with the murdered woman. Morgan, after hearing the story, realizes that the mystery has deepened, and it becomes more complicated when the Assistant Commissioner, Sir Brian Lewis, explains that Jacqueline was not married but was being kept by Sir Howard Fenton, a high-ranking diplomat whose names must be kept out of the case.

À Londres, un jeune peintre d'origine néerlandaise, Jan Van Rooyen, se rend chez sa maîtresse. Ne la trouvant pas, il finit par s'endormir, après avoir tourné en rond un moment. À son réveil, l'appartement est envahi par des policiers : dans une pièce à côté, on vient de découvrir l'occupante des lieux, morte étouffée. Van Rooyen est le "coupable idéal", un peu trop aux yeux de l'inspecteur Morgan, qui dirige l'enquête ...

Joseph Losey méltatlanul elfeledett filmje a klasszikus noir alapszituációval indul: Jan, a szegény holland festő Londonban megismerkedik álmai asszonyával, de csak titokban találkozhatnak a hölgy előkelő férje miatt. Amikor egy nap megérkezik az áhított randevúra, a pazar műtárgyakkal telezsúfolt bérelt lakásban a hölgyet holtan találja, a rendőrség pedig gyilkossággal gyanúsítja. A történet végig egy-két díszletben játszódik, a hangsúly a kiváló dialógusokon és a Losey által kreált mesteri atmoszférateremtésen van (levegős, világos, remekül berendezett belső terek, éles ellentétben az amerikai noir díszleteivel). A lassan kibontakozó, de feszes történet egy percre sem unalmas, a végén pedig elismerésre méltó, intelligens csavarral zárul.
