Discuss The Bye Bye Man

Finally IMDb's users managed to score it correctly at 3.9/10 currently so there's no denying it's crap. Everyone's on the same page, but are we, really? Because even though it had a horrible name and bad reviews, it raked in triple its budget domestically in only three weeks. Again, even though everyone knew or should have known better, they still went and paid for a ticket and some overpriced concessions in turn making this almost obviously crappy film a whole lot of money. People please stop paying for this tripe, but what if you're at a theater hoping to see a horror flick and this is the only horror flick showing? This is where they get their profits and with profits like that it won't be long before_ TBBM 2 _ is in the works. If indie horror didn't exist I wouldn't be a horror fan at all, never mind the massive horror fanatic I am now. Well regardless if anyone ever reads this, at least I got to write it out somewhere and post it, but[edit] it actually was seen by many!

Well here I am editing my Op in a calmer fashion, but I tell ya in the 30 days since I posted that I've truly found a home all over this site finding great discussions, there are good people here and the vibe is very relaxed, I haven't seen any trolling or attacks on people due to shear difference of opinions. I hope it stays this way because it's been far better than any IMDb forum was at the point of its extinction(Thanks IMDb dicks), I've found decent people all around and I'm not pushed away from starting threads for films to add my opinion where on IMDb I had to really think "do I really want to open this can of worms?" because once out it's open for attack especially if it's a positive opinion and that is not how a community should operate.

I kinda enjoyed the movie to be honest, I found the bye bye man interesting as a character and I wanted to know more about him. The idea of the movie was more entertaining than most horror films but my only problem with it is that it was quite predictable.

I went into this movie not knowing anything other than the name and I have to say that I was really pleasantly surprised. Maybe people's expectations were too high, but to me the overall negativity in the reviews was very unexpected.

Sure, this movie didn't reinvent the wheel, but it was entertaining, creepy and had me on the edge of my seat a couple of times.

Ok now that two people have stuck up for it and I don't have ANY memory of the film I think maybe I should watch it again from the start. Also my overzealous angry rant really screams "I took far too many xanax" which would precisely explain my lack of memory of the film, it happens from time to time.

No, if a film doesn't succeed first time - there is no point in giving it another try.

I do agree though that Horror movies in general now days are below standard and only a few are anywhere near the quality they should be. James Wan is doing a good job tho with his movies with creating a horror movie while giving us a good story at the same time.

In horror you're probably right, but it's not always the case in other genres. The biggest example I can remember of me half watching, not giving enough time to and judging it too early in ignorance was Cloud Atlas (2012). When I finally sat down and gave it my full undivided attention it ended up becoming a great and memorable film experience. Admittedly, for whatever reason, I shared a certain prejudice to both this film and that before watching them, but this is certainly no Cloud Atlas , there is certainly no profound meaning in The Bye Bye Man lol . Though Cloud Atlas was definitely not a film for everyone with it's multi-timeline shifting theme, I know it frustrated a lot of people(understandably so) and kept the rating too low IMO at 7.5.

It's nuts though how Cloud Atlas gets a moderately good rating and the next comic based film ends up smashing into IMDb's top 250 going deep inside beneath 50th or so place, it's ludicrous how many films of late have ratings well into the middle 8's, film's driven by computer graphics, flashes and bangs with little to no inspiring plot and "factions" of people that I couldn't force myself to get behind and root for, but that's another story.

James Wan is imo the best horror director and writer of all time in terms of style, story, atmosphere, his craft and his general way of mixing things up and creating authentic stories and delivering them to us in a way that actually creeps us out, IMO there is no contest in the matter for the year 2000+ he owns it. The only contender in wide audience films would be Oren Peli, sure he started the whole P.A. craze which I hated personally, although I did really enjoy that TV show he wrote The River, but it was axed for some reason I cannot imagine other than the fact that it was an ABC product and ABC is considered by me and most people I know have all but deprogrammed it out of their home sat/cable menu.

Did you see the picture for his upcoming Aquaman film? I saw the credit and cringed "No!" this was before I visited the page, but then I saw the insanely good cast to go with the poster and storyline, but honestly Aquaman-James Wan? It is intriguing.

Aquaman is being directed by James Wan?!?!? Interesting but we have seen him in another blockbuster with Furious 7 which was decent but it didn't feel like a James Wan film. Hopefully the more centered story revolving around a single character will favor him, also this aquaman does feel like a darker version and perhaps that will suit his style a lot more than Dominic Torreto.
