1995年春节临近时，在北京某餐馆打工的河南民工王小山（王宏伟）因一心回家无心工作被老板开除。在回家前，他想找个老乡作伴。 为此，他一一走访了他的建筑工人、票贩子、大学生、服务员、妓女等老乡，然而他们各自有留在北京不回家过年的理由（有想趁年关卖多些黄牛票多挣些钞票的，有很想回家但因为现在的工作觉得无脸见家人只让王小山把钱捎回去的，有觉得回家过年很没有意思的，不一而足），王小山费劲口舌也没能将他们说服，只落得无可奈何的失望。

Xiao Shan, a temporary worker at the Hongyuan Restaurant, has just been fired by his boss Zhao Guoqing. Deciding to leave Beijing and returns to his home in Anyang, he goes to see a series of people from his hometown who have also been living in Beijing-construction workers, train ticket scalpers, university students, attendant, prostitutes-but no one wants to go back with him. Dispirited and confused, he searches out one after another of his old friends who are still in Beijing. Finally he leaves his wild long hair, the symbol of his life in the city, at a roadside barber stand as his offering to Beijing.

Xiao Shan, un employé intérimaire du restaurant Hongyuan, vient d'être licencié par son patron Zhao Guoqing. Décidant de quitter Pékin et de rentrer chez lui à Anyang, il va voir une série de personnes de sa ville natale qui vivent également à Pékin - ouvriers du bâtiment, vendeurs de billets de train, étudiants d'université, préposés, prostituées – mais personne ne veut rentrer avec lui. Découragé et confus, il cherche un à un ses anciens amis qui sont encore à Pékin. Finalement, il laisse ses longs cheveux sauvages, symbole de sa vie en ville, chez un coiffeur en bord de route, en guise d'offrande à Pékin.
