Discuss Lies & Illusions

I never would’ve thought someone could pull off an action comedy spy romance thriller in modern times, but this was a great throwback to that golden era of films like Charade (1963) or maybe even Hitchcock. Tons of fun and lots of laughs as long as you don’t take anything too seriously… Ya gotta love a ruthless killer who pauses to ask his victim for cooking recipes! (“Boone” stole the show)

The music is perfect: a shameless ripoff of every spy theme ever played on a twangy guitar. The movie isn’t afraid to make fun of itself, and it signals this loud & clear with a groan worthy cat jump scare in the early scenes. That’s your cue to realize the film is messing with you.

Christian Slater is perfect as the reluctant nerdy hero who barely knows which end of the gun to point. I died laughing when he pulled the gun in his big dramatic moment “I’ve had about enough of you guys!” …only for them to slap it out of his hand and throw him in the trunk. At least he had a good book to read in there.

Unfortunately this movie was marketed all wrong. The trailer, posters & dvd cover are dark & tense, like any forgettable thriller, and that’s why I avoided it for so long. If they had billed this as what it is, an over-the-top comedy action flick, I think it would’ve stood out more.

The bickering couple in the middle of a high speed car shootout was brilliantly done. That and the crazy bar fight between 2 hot chicks, interspersed with Christian Slater unloading his marriage troubles on some random drunk while some dude plays Irish music on a Casiotone… I dunno who came up with this stuff but I’ll have what they’re having.

Well, you seem to be in the minority (1/1,000,000). It's showing on Freevee, so I put it on my watchlist. I used to love Christian Slater back in the day (late 80s, early 90s) but fell out of my view. I'll give it a go later.

I was a big fan of CS also which is why I took a chance. I can see how it got low ratings if people were expecting a serious thriller. It's definitely not the kind of movie anyone should take seriously, it's just pure cheeky fun.

50 years ago, audiences would eat this up. Nowadays I think people expect thrillers to be serious, no silliness. But in the words of both the director & producer, this is deliberately "over the top". I mean, the director is the guy who gave us Sabrina the Teenage Witch so.....!
