Discuss This Modern Age

This is, to considerable extent, a quite good little Pre-Code film. It's certainly nothing earth shattering, but simply a pleasant and agreeable light diversion "smart set" comedy-drama. The film mainly appeals to me for the charming and well-realized daughter and mother characterizations by Joan Crawford and Pauline Frederick, and the believability of their vibrant, warm, loving sincere relationship. The depiction of that winning relationship is appealing and captivating, with Crawford and Frederick ideal as the well-matched daughter-mother pair.

The rest of the story (specifically Crawford's character's interactions with her romantic suitors), and the two young male leads (Neil Hamilton, Monroe Owsley), on the other hand, are, I feel, weak and decidedly below average.

I rate this movie 6 out of 10. Were I rating just the Crawford and Frederick parts of the film, I'd easily feel able to give this an 8.
