Durant la Segona Guerra Mundial (1939-1945), tres soldats van fer una promesa: trobar-se en un lloc concret deu anys després de la guerra. Tots tres compleixen la promesa, però quan es reuneixen s'adonen que ja no tenen res en comú. És un musical dominat per la malenconia amb números antològics del gènere, com el de les tapes dels contenidors de la brossa, el de Cyd Charisse al ring de boxa o el que Kelly realitza sobre uns patins.

Three World War II buddies promise to meet at a specified place and time 10 years after the war. They keep their word only to discover how far apart they've grown. But the reunion sparks memories of youthful dreams that haven't been fulfilled -- and slowly, the three men reevaluate their lives and try to find a way to renew their friendship.

Trois soldats, amis inséparables, qui viennent de faire la guerre ensemble, Ted, Dough et Angie, parient avec le barman de leur café habituel qu’ils se reverront ici même, au bar, dans dix ans jour pour jour, le 10 octobre 1955...

Ted, Doug und Angie sind drei ehemalige Soldaten, die sich versprochen haben, sich an einem Tag, dem 11.10.1955, wiederzusehen, und zwar in einer Bar in New York. Tatsächlich tauchen alle drei dort auf, doch ihre Freundschaft von damals hat sich seither verändert. Ein Organisator will das Trio dennoch in einer Livesendung im Fewrnsehen zusammenbringen – was dadurch erschwert wird, daß eine Gruppe von Gangstern hinter einem von ihnen her ist.

Douglas, Angie e Ted hanno combattuto insieme durante la Seconda Guerra Mondiale. Si ritrovano dopo dieci anni, ma le amarezze della vita li hanno cambiati. Tramite Douglas, che lavora nella televisione, Ted conosce Jackie, che fa la programmista televisiva. Grazie a uno stratagemma di quest'ultima, Ted viene salvato dalle minacce di un gangster e Douglas si riavvicina alla moglie. Finale rosa per Ted e Jackie.

Ellos mantienen su palabra sólo para descubrir lo lejos que han crecido.
