Лентата е вдъхновена от приключенията на известния през 50-те и 60-те години френски филмов персонаж мосю Хуло. В центъра на сюжета е мъж на средна възраст, който живее в Белград заедно със своята майка и който се опитва безуспешно да води нормален живот в разгара на война. Всичките му опити обаче се провалят. За да се измъкне от военното положение, той напуска дома си и се впуска в дълго и непредсказуемо пътешествие, изпълнено с голям брой абсурдни ситуации и преживявания.

Middle-aged cinephile and film projectionist Pera still lives with his mother - and best friend - Mara, in Belgrade. It's 1999 and when NATO bombs start raining down on Serbia, the two of them become refugees. After a surreal journey, they end up in New York, where Pera realizes that he can no longer do the old job he loved so much. While he and Mara were struggling to survive, the new age of digital projection was born. Then Pera stumbles upon some discarded projectors and his new mission in life becomes clear: he will travel around and show people the magic of Real Cinema - the magic that can only be created by celluoid, mechanical projectors, the silver screen and flickering light.

Belgrade, 1999. Pera est projectionniste. A 40 ans, pourtant épris de Lela, son amour de jeunesse, il vit encore chez sa mère, Mara. Le jour où l'Otan bombarde la Serbie, Pera apprend qu'il vient de gagner une green card, alors qu'il n'a jamais participé à une loterie. Lela, elle, décide de fuir aux Etats-Unis avec sa fille. Pera reste avec sa mère. Alors que les bombardements se rapprochent, Mara, inquiète, insiste pour que son fils parte à son tour. Il fouille sa poubelle et retrouve la carte qu'il avait jetée. Mais il ne partira pas sans sa mère. Après un détour par l'ambassade danoise et grâce à l'entregent de quelques tziganes, ils parviennent à obtenir un visa...

Das 40-jährige lethargische Muttersöhnchen Pera hat noch immer nicht den Sprung in ein Leben ohne seine Mutter Mara geschafft. Als die Nato im Jahr 1999 Belgrad bombardiert und Pera urplötzlich eine Greencard für die USA in einer Lotterie gewinnt, muss er sich zwischen seiner Heimat und der Sicherheit in einem fremden Land ohne Mara entscheiden. Erst als seine Jugendliebe Lela mit ihrer Tochter in die USA flieht, beschließt er, für seine Mutter ein Visum zu erkämpfen und die weite Reise ins Ungewisse mit ihr auf sich zu nehmen ...
