This beautifully filmed movie is like watching a tragic tale unfold within a dream. The pictures the camera paints are potent and evocative.

The story, itself, is powerful, sharing a heartbreaking series of events that we're more or less able to guess how it'll all end, but that one still wants to go along for the ride as the visuals, and Victor Sjostrom's/Seastrom's superlative acting (he also directed), are so mesmerizing. The sense of distant time and place is haunting.
