Španielsko koncom 30. rokov, posledné dni občianskej vojny. Desaťročný Carlos, ktorého otec, republikán, bol zabitý v boji, je svojím poručníkom zanechaný v sirotinci Santa Lucía, depresívnej stavbe uprostred vyľudnenej krajiny, kam sú zvážajú siroty po obetiach vojny.
