1991年，18岁的三合会会员刘建明（刘德华饰）听从大哥韩琛（曾志伟饰）的指示进入警校学习，成为警方卧底。而同时警校中的另一名学生陈永仁（梁朝伟饰），受警方安排表面上将其强迫退学，实际上则是让他进入三合会当卧底。刘建明从警校毕业后顺利的进入警局，并且职位步步高升，已成为刑事情报科A队的一员，在此期间他利用各种机会为韩琛提供了大量的情报。而陈永仁在这些年以来已经得到了韩琛的初步信任，但由于韩琛的案件始终没有破，他永远只能呆在黑帮，只有黄警督（黄秋生饰）与他单线联系。 2002年的一个晚上，根据陈永仁卧底情报，获知一批毒品即将交易，而交易的一方为韩琛，但由于当时刘建明及时将消息传给了韩琛使其成功逃脱，不过因此双方发现各自的内部俱有“内鬼”，于是一场激烈的角斗由此展开。在最后的结局中，双方“内鬼”都认出了自己的身份，不过刘建明抢先一步，已经将陈永仁在警察局的档案删除，但在删除之前，保留了一个备份，密码是女朋友Mary的生日。经过深思，刘建明决定做一个好人，请求陈永仁给他一次机会，陈永仁没有信，拷上了刘建明。最后陈永仁死在了韩琛的另一个警方卧底枪下，刘建明也杀死了那个开枪的卧底。

The setting is the never-ending war between the police and the Triads of Hong Kong. Chan is a cop who's been assigned to undercover work inside the Triads for so long that he's been able to rise through the ranks to a position of some authority. Lau, meanwhile, is a secret member of the Triads who has infiltrated the police force with an equal level of success. As they feed their bosses information on the plans and counter-plans of the organizations they pretend to serve, they both begin to feel the stresses of their double lives as they become torn between the oppressive obligations they owe to their superiors and the growing camaraderie they share with the foot soldiers around them. As the two organizations become increasingly aware of the moles in their midsts, the race is on for Chan and Lau to try and get out of the game alive.

Dreiteilige Filmreihe Hongkong-chinesischer Gangsterfilme/Thriller, inszeniert von Andrew Lau und Alan Mak und besetzt mit einigen der Top-Darsteller Hongkongs. Im Mittelpunkt steht das gegenseitige Infiltrieren und Ausspionieren von Polizei und Gangster-Triaden mittels eingeschleuster "Maulwürfe". Der erste Teil wurde 2002 veröffentlicht. Der internationale Titel ist eine Anlehnung an Dantes Inferno und die Abteilung für Interne Ermittlungen bei der Polizei (Internal Affairs). Im 2003 erschienenen Prequel wird die Vorgeschichte zum ersten Teil näher gezeigt. Der dritte Teil aus dem Jahr 2003 erzählt die Geschichte des ersten Teils weiter, bietet aber auch einige Rückblenden um noch offene Handlungsstränge zusammenzuführen. Die Film-Trilogie war insbesondere in Asien ein grosser kommerzieller Erfolg. 2006 drehte Matin Scorsese ein Remake des ersten Teils unter dem Titel "Departed - Unter Feinden" mit Leonardo DiCaprio und Matt Damon in den Hauptrollen.

유위강과 맥조휘가 공동 연출을 맡은 3부작. 건조하고 절제된 연출, 배우들의 뛰어난 연기, 미장센, 영상미와 훌륭한 완성도로 쇠퇴해 가던 홍콩 영화계를 다시 한번 일으켜 세웠다는 평을 받았다. 8~90년대 인기를 끈 홍콩 느와르 영화가 수많은 총탄, 사나이들의 의리 등에 주력했다면, 무간도는 느와르 영화 특유의 심리적 긴장감을 흡수하여 자신들의 것으로 소화해 냈다. 3부작이 전반적으로 선과 악의 구별이 마땅한데도 여러 상황 때문에 그 경계가 허물어져 가는 듯한 느낌을 준다.
