Prodotta dalla casa di produzione Yellow Fish in cooperazione con molteplici altre compagnie, la miniserie Millennium altro non è che una "extended-version" dei tre lungometraggi tratti dai romanzi dello scrittore svedese Stieg Larsson: "Uomini che odiano le donne" (2009), "La ragazza che giocava con il fuoco" (2009) e "La Regina dei castelli di carta" (2009). Ai tre lungometraggi sono state aggiunte le scene tagliate dalla versione per il cinema e sono stati suddivisi in due parti della durata di 90 minuti circa, formando così un totale complessivo di sei episodi. In totale la serie televisiva dura circa 110 minuti in più della versione per il cinema.
Millenium è stata trasmessa sul canale svedese SVT1 nel periodo compreso tra il 20 marzo e il 24 aprile 2010. In Italia è stata trasmessa su LA7 a partire dal 21 settembre 2011.

In Giudea il re Erode il Grande chiacchiera a un banchetto con due rappresentanti di Augusto, imperatore di Roma sull'annunciata venuta del Messia presso il popolo ebraico. Erode non lo teme: lo schiaccerà. A Nazareth, una giovane popolana di nome Maria, promessa sposa a Giuseppe, riceve la visita di un messaggero celeste che le preannuncia che partorirà un figlio sebbene non ingravidata da persona umana, mentre la cugina Elisabetta genererà assieme al marito, il vecchio sacerdote Zaccaria, Giovanni Battista. Maria si mette presto in viaggio per andare a trovare la cugina e avere così conferma dell'annuncio ricevuto. Giuseppe intanto, venuto a sapere che Maria è incinta, pensa di ripudiarla in segreto, ma viene convinto da un sogno ad accettarla nella propria casa. Il governo di Roma ordina il censimento e Maria e Giuseppe partono per Betlemme dove in una stalla nascerà Gesù, venerato da pastori e dai re Magi Baldassarre, Gasparre e Melchiorre, giunti al seguito di una stella. Re Erode venuto a sapere della venuta al mondo del possibile nuovo Messia, ordina che tutti i neonati del posto vengano uccisi; mentre si compie la carneficina la famiglia di Gesù fugge in Egitto. Quando re Erode muore dopo pochi anni, Maria, Giuseppe e Gesù ritornano a Nazareth dove Gesù impara le Sacre Scritture. Passati una ventina d'anni Gesù, sotto il regno di Erode Antipa, figlio del precedente, incontra sulle rive del Giordano il cugino Giovanni Battista e gli chiede di essere battezzato come tutti gli altri peccatori. Scacciato da Nazareth per le sue parole nella sinagoga, Gesù comincia a riunire attorno a se i primi discepoli Andrea, Filippo, Giovanni, Giacomo. Incontra un giovane indemoniato e lo libera; fa riempire di pesci la barca di Simon Pietro, va a casa di Matteo Levi, l'esattore delle tasse, e racconta la parabola del figlio prodigo, convincendo così sia Simon Pietro che Matteo a seguirlo; resuscita la figlia di Giairo, toccando il cuore di Tommaso. La sua predicazione raccoglie ormai sempre più persone, attratte anche dai tanti miracoli: ridà la vista ai ciechi, sfama centinaia di persone, moltiplicando i pani e i pesci. Si susseguono gli episodi della vita di Gesù: l'incontro con Giuda Iscariota e con Maria Maddalena, il discorso della montagna, l'invio dei discepoli a predicare, fino al riconoscimento di Pietro a capo della Chiesa.
Il Battista verrà ucciso poco tempo dopo il battesimo di Gesù, per ordine dell'adultera moglie di Erode, Erodiade, la quale, sfruttando le grazie della giovane figlia Salomè, costringerà Erode a farlo decapitare.
Verso i suoi 33 anni, Gesù comincia a essere malvisto dai sacerdoti ebrei, dato che lui dichiara di essere il figlio di Dio, cosa inaccettabile per le loro leggi; inoltre i pretori e i governatori romani cominciano a perdere il controllo della situazione in Giudea. Così, dopo aver celebrato l'Ultima Cena, Gesù viene catturato dai messi del sommo sacerdote Caifa, mandati sul posto dal traditore Giuda, e successivamente condotto dal governatore Ponzio Pilato per essere condannato. Tuttavia egli, non conoscendo le religioni del posto, non trova in Gesù alcun peccato e lo affida alla giustizia del popolo e dei sacerdoti che lo condannano a essere crocifisso, dopo averlo fatto flagellare oltre misura, al posto dell'assassino Barabba. Gesù assieme a due ladroni viene crocifisso e sopporta un lungo percorso a piedi, dal tribunale alla collina scelta per la crocifissione (il Golgota = luogo del teschio) portando sulle spalle la sua croce e sopportando il dolore atroce delle frustate dei soldati, degli scherni della folla e della corona di spine sul capo. Gesù muore dopo una lunga agonia, ma resusciterà tre giorni dopo, apparendo prima a Maria Maddalena e poi agli Apostoli ai quali affida l'annuncio del Vangelo, per poi salire definitivamente in Cielo, alla destra del Padre.
