I was watching it at a friend's house yesterday. My family watched it as a kid, I have vague memories of it since it was cancelled when I was 8. I did not know Kate Jackson got her start on it. A holiday special I saw had a sl about a deranged man killing a priest in a church, that had to be heavy stuff in the 70's.

I've been watching it on Heroes and Icons. I have not yet seen the episode you refer to, but I think Police Story, which was on the air at the same time is much more gritty and realistic. That show did not have a regular cast of characters so it was completely possible that the main character could die or have his life ruined. Alcoholism and other stress related illnesses were presented in a matter of fact manner.
Still, The Rookies is certainly heavier than, say Adam 12 or Dragnet.
