Well, I got through today's funeral service but only with the help of 3/4 of a bag of Werther's Original Caramel-filled Hard Candies. I don't do chocolate. Nicely written episode. I usually hate the vapid character of Maxie, but I have to say I haven't minded her at all this week and have actually enjoyed watching the actress. Hoping the writers decide to reshape the character and not make her such a cliche and stereotype from now on.

It was difficult getting through the episode without shedding some form of tear. They went all out for this character. I like the way they saluted him mainly for being one of the good guys while the cop salute was the backdrop. I think it hit home with viewers more that way.
I kept noticing everyone going to hug Maxie except for Lulu ... obviously building for the tail end cliffhanger.
So after 20 years in a coma, Nina smokes?? Ummmmkaaay....

That the show actually NEVER made Nathan a bad guy, or bad cop like Dante, in 4 years, shows they still recognize there is a difference.

Yes, I cried through most of it too. I'm glad to know there won't be any more scenes like that. It's a little stressful, kind of like watching "This Is Us" every week. Hmmm... forgot about the flashbacks that may be coming our way.
I would have liked to have seen bubble-brained Lulu smacked to the ground. She was so surprised by Maxie's response. Dimwit!

Nah she knew she was in trouble. That's why she kept her distance the whole time. But yeah she's a dimwit for thinking she could sly her way around it. Like I'll wait til everyone is gone then approach her where I don't look so bad.

Extremely well done episode. Not one of the characters annoyed me except for Lulu at the end.

Agreed, and I definitely shed more tears. They should definitely win some Emmys for scenes from this past week.

Huh? What a bizarre thing to complain about.

Nina said it was just the past few days to help her cope with the stress (or something to that effect). I personally loved Michelle Stafford's performance today. It was raw and emotional. Very believable compares to KS.

I think that's mainly because there was very little dialogue. Mostly monologues and music montages.

I love watching Stafford. It's like she's forever balancing camp and naturalism. I can't really think of too many other actors who do that. Maybe Jessica Lange.

You missed her best years on Y&R. She was so outrageous that as good of an actress her replacement (Gina Tognoni) is, the character is a way complete different now than when Stafford played it. There is not even a comparison between the two in the role. Phyllis's best years was when Stafford was in the role simply because she knew how to work it and press people's buttons in the role. The current Phyllis just does not.

The funeral was very beautifully done. For those of you who have been watching GH for decades, has there been a funeral comparable to this one?
The only criticism that I have is that I wish for this one episode GH would have used a real church. Not this tiny chapel in a mausoleum that they use for every single wedding, baptism, and funeral. How much could it have cost to have rented a church? In reality, a police officer's funeral is attended by hundreds of cops from all over the country. Now I realize this would have been out of their budget, but I suspect that there would have been many people who would have volunteered to be an extra for this episode. I would have loved to have seen the funeral take place in a large church with hundreds of extras. Not because Nathan was around for a long time, or was that interesting a character, but because he represents a good person and a police officer who gave his life in service of others.

There were several retrospective episodes of dead characters and actors, but this was the best funeral episode in at least 20 years.

Maybe a New York or Los Angeles police officer, but there was a funeral for a cop who was shot on duty right here within the last year, and it definitely wasn't attended by 'hundreds of cops. from all over the country.'
Most of the episode took place outdoors, and I thought they did a good job showing that there were many police officers present. They even did a traditional three-volley salute, how cool is that?

The last time I can remember that they did a single episode devoted to the funeral of a single character was Lila Quartermaine. Even Edward's funeral was lame and ruined by bringing Heather Webber into it for no reason. The last few character deaths didn't even warrant an onscreen funeral of any kind. Nathan has only been on for a short time, he doesn't deserve the full Lila Quartermaine treatment, but he got it anyway.
