I don't understand the plaudits for this series. There wasn't one original idea in it. Two brothers - one a cop - one a yakuza. How often has that been done with friends growing up together and taking different paths in life only to collide at the end? The Yakuza families at war - again - how often has this been portrayed in one way or another. The borrowings from "Kill Bill" "Snatch" "River" made this series just a pastiche of styles - couldn't the writers develop their own style? Evidently not - although they might have thought they did with the comedic interlude of Granny and Wife escaping from a Yakuza safe house and rescuing Yuto's woman and baby before waiting for the Yakuza to turn up so as they could fight them with frying pans - Oh - my shoulders heaved with that one. The needless gay sub plot - because lets face it that was only there to include explicit gay sex scenes which are so fashionable today - Rodney contributed little or nothing to the plot besides his junkie promiscuity. And Taki the disobedient child who claimed it wasn't her fault she wasn't there when her Grandfather died - well actually it was dear - you were the one who stole your mother's credit card and took off for London - what sense did that dialogue make? And last but not least - the modern ballet at the end - well - how hilarious was that? It was so embarrassingly bad. They left it open to a second series of course - I for one will bow out now.

Yeah... Pretty much a remix series in that sense...

But it did address the themes of redemption and the cyclical nature of some of the events and themes was interesting...

They style seemed a bit disjointed at times. The London gangster guy was as if he was in a comedy show, probably even more than the granny/baby-escape subplot.

The massive levels of gayness is typical Netflix. The small lesbian girl gangster being the silliest of all of these. As if she wouldn't have been tossed across the room by any of the men she tried to intimidate.

I don't think it was pretending that all these elements were original. I think it was just a celebration of these tropes thrown together and that's the appeal of it. It seemed to have themes that made it reminiscent of John Woo. I liked it for what it was. It wasn't perfect, no.

I believe it's a BBC show, not a Netflix show. It just happens to be on Netflix. They seem to get a lot of BBC stuff.

@JustinJackFlash I see. Good point. BBC is probably gayer than Netflix in terms of the movies they make and it's set in London, so it's not too out of place...

I wouldn't know, I don't watch a lot of BBC these days. It does strike me as strange that Netflix buys so much BBC stuff seen as we can all just watch these shows on BBC for free anyway.

The BBC should be renamed the PCC - the Politically Correct Corporation - they are so focussed on gay sex and ethnic minority inclusion that they have become a laughing stock.

@JustinJackFlash They probably do deals for BBC content Europe wide, or even broader... I'm not in the UK so it makes sense. I don't watch BBC stuff in general, but I remember what BBC was like when I lived there.

The BBC may be a tad on the woke side (though they hardly stand alone on that front these days) but generally they seem to be a lot better than they used to be when I was younger. All we got were tea drinking crime shows and soaps. These days they do put a bit more craft and effort into their tv shows. You wouldn't have had things like Peaky Blinders, Taboo, Devs, Normal People or even Giri/Haji back in the day. Whether you like these shows or not there is some kind of depth and voice from these things that you just don't get from Eastenders.

Well, in the past 20 years they've had to compete more on the narrative series/miniseries, so they're bound to have to elevate the quality of what they make.

Also, I think there are some smaller production houses that get BBC to distribute some of their stuff these days. I think Devs might be such a series, because I don't think it is associated with the BBC outside of the UK, or maybe I just didn't notice...

The woke stuff in the UK seems to have grown gradually, it was pretty woke even 20 years ago, whereas in the US it seems to have accelerated in the past decade.

True. They did seem to take a lot longer to catch on though. It seems only very recently that there's things on BBC that I want to watch. There was a lot of crap for a very long time.

Devs might not be BBC. I'm not sure on that. But it was shown on BBC over here, which is strange as normally you'd expect to watch something like that on HBO or Netflix. I guess what I mean is there is a lot of difference not just on what BBC makes but what they are prepared to broadcast.

Oh, it was very out of the blue over here too. It just exploded around 2017 and was suddenly everywhere.

Devs was an FX/Hulu collaboration.

This series (Giri/Haji) debuted in October 2019 on BBC Two, then on Netflix in January 2020.

I see. That makes sense because we don't get Hulu over here so their shows tend to get picked up by our terrestrial channels like BBC and Channel 4.

Which of the main streaming channels do you get?

We get Netflix, Amazon Prime, Disney+ and Apple tv. We also get some smaller niche ones like Shudder but it sounds like the US has loads of big streaming services with HBO Max just starting and that other new one Peacock which made Brave New World. I'm surprised they can all survive. That's gotta be one crowded market.

We have over 200 channels available to stream. Peacock is just an NBC (one of the big 3) rebranding like Paramount is really CBS. I personally only pay for one (Hulu) which I got a good deal on a year ago ($1.99 a month for a year, when the year was up it went to $5.99) because I wanted to catch up & finish watching Vikings. It also has some good movies, older TV series & Coronation Street.

That is one hell of a lot of channels.
