He was definitely one of the main reasons the show worked. Almost every ep but 2 had him prominently featured! One ep that did not was about Potter's visiting son-in-law. This ep, though in the highly drab era of the last season, somehow half-worked. The personal aspects of the ep? If Alda really guested on After Mash (as the rumor said he was about to) he would have done little to improve the feeling of the show unless he had lots to do.
