Alan Alda wrote an autobio of himself back around 2006. He spoke of a time he and co-star Wayne Rogers read a script and wondered what the line meant. They decided it must mean something and they did the scene. Later they were watching the dailies with creator Larry Gelbart. LG saw the scene and asked why they said that. They told him he wrote it that way. He announced it was all a typo error and the scene needed to be reshot. Alda did not understand everything Hawk said in the show's first years under Gelbart. He did, however, when he himself actually took over the show. So two people understood half of Hawk each not just one!
