Yugi e seus amigos vão para a loja de Salomon Moto, o avô de Yugi. Lá, Salomon mostra para eles a raríssima carta do Dragão Branco de Olhos Azuis, existem apenas quatro delas em todo o mundo. Nesse instante, Seto Kaiba chega a loja e, ao ver a carta, tenta consegui-la, mas Salomon se recusa a trocar ou vender a carta. Kaiba então desafia Salomon para um duelo, valendo a carta. Kaiba vence e, para humilhar Salomon, ele rasga a carta do Dragão Branco. Salomon pede a Yugi que enfrente Kaiba e lhe mostre o coração das cartas. Yugi, por seu avô, decidi enfrentar Kaiba. No duelo, Kaiba faz uma revelação: ele já possui as outras três cartas do Dragão Branco de Olhos Azuis. Mas Yugi também faz uma revelação surpreendente: ele possui o indestrutível Exodia. Com Exodia, Yugi derrota Kaiba e usa o poder de seu enigma do milênio para destruir o lado sombrio de Seto Kaiba.

A vitória de Yugi sobre Seto Kaiba tem grande repercussão entre os duelistas. Enquanto isso, Joey não está se dando bem no jogo e pede ajuda ao avô do Yugi para que ele lhe ensine como jogar. Uma noite, Yugi recebe em casa uma fita de vídeo, gravada por Maximilium Pegasus, o criador de Monstros de Duelo. Pegasus ficou tão intrigado com a vitória de Yugi sobre Kaiba que decidiu "testar" as habilidades de duelo de Yugi, lhe desafiando para uma partida. Yugi enfrenta Pegasus, mas não consegue derrota-lo. Pegasus então revela que, assim como Yugi, ele também possui uma relíquia milenar: o olho do milênio. Pegasus usa os poderes do olho para aprisionar a alma do avô do Yugi, e em seguida desaparece.

Yugi está triste por ter perdido o seu avô, mas ele recebe por correio uma encomenda de Pegasus, dizendo que Yugi poderá salvar seu avô se vencer o campeonato do Reino dos Duelistas. Joey fica sabendo do campeonato e decide participar também, para ganhar o prêmio em dinheiro e poder usá-lo para pagar a operação de Serenity, a irmã de Joey, que corre o risco de perder a visão. Durante a viagem até a Ilha dos Duelistas, Wheevil pedi para que Yugi lhe mostre as cartas de Exodia. Wheevil então engana Yugi e atira as cartas ao mar. Joey tenta salvá-las, mas só consegue recuperar duas das cinco cartas. Sem Exodia, mas com os amigos por perto, Yugi precisará mostrar na raça quem é o "Rei dos Jogos".

Todos chegam a ilha do Reino dos Duelistas e o campeonato tem início. Para avançar para a fase final, Yugi precisa ganhar os duelos e conseguir um total de 10 estrelas. Yugi, disposto a se vingar de Wheevil, o desafia para um duelo. Inicialmente, Wheevil parece levar vantagem, mas Yugi usa sua carta da força-espelho para destruir várias das cartas de Wheevil. Mas Wheevil garante que ainda tem a sua criatura mais poderosa, pronta para vencer o jogo.

Wheevil usa sua carta mais forte: a Grande Mariposa. Mas Yami Yugi consegue vencer o duelo ao utilizar o Rei Caveira. Tendo perdido todas as suas estrelas, Wheevil é desclassificado. Não apenas isso: todos descobrem que Wheevil é um duelista que joga sujo, trapaceando para vencer suas partidas. Joey fica com a luva de duelo que pertencia a Wheevil. Com a vitória, Yugi já conseguiu reunir três estrelas.

Mai Valentine desafia Joey para um duelo. Inicialmente, Mai parece adivinhar todas as suas cartas sem nem olhar para elas. Mas Joey descobre que Mai usa um truque, colocando aromas diferentes em cada uma das suas cartas, afim de desestabilizar emocionalmente o adversário. Dessa forma, Joey consegue se acalmar e vence o duelo contra Mai, usando o Mago do Tempo. Com isso, Joey já tem duas estrelas.

Yami Yugi vence o duelo contra Mako Tsunami. Com isso, Yugi já tem cinco estrelas.

Pegasus faz uma aliança com os acionistas da Corporação Kaiba, que pretendem dar um golpe em Seto Kaiba e assumir o controle da empresa. Assim, o irmão mais novo de Seto Kaiba, Mokuba Kaiba, é feito prisioneiro; enquanto Seto Kaiba é perseguido pelos capangas de Pegasus. No Reino dos Duelistas, Mokuba consegue fugir da prisão e rouba as estrelas de um dos duelistas. Yugi e seus amigos desafiam Mokuba para um duelo, afim de recuperar as estrelas. Mokuba quer se vingar por Yugi ter derrotado o seu irmão, e rouba duas estrelas de Yugi, fazendo com que ele fique com apenas três. Mas Yami Yugi consegue convencer Mokuba a confiar nele, para que juntos enfrentem Pegasus. Mokuba é novamente capturado por um dos capangas de Pegasus e Yugi o desafia para um duelo, para libertar Mokuba. Mas o capanga diz que outra pessoa vai duelar com Yugi: o fantasma de Seto Kaiba!

O capanga diz que Seto Kaiba foi morto e agora se tornou um fantasma, que voltou para se vingar de Yugi. Ele aposta suas três estrelas no duelo. A partida entre Yami Yugi e o fanstama de Kaiba se inicia. Enquanto isso, Seto Kaiba, que ainda está vivo, consegue acessar a rede do Reino dos Duelistas e tenta usá-la para encontrar Yugi. No duelo, o fantasma de Kaiba usa o Dragão Branco de Olhos Azuis. Sem Exodia, Yami Yugi tenta usar as Cartolas Mágicas para proteger o Mago Negro contra o Dragão.

Yami Yugi consegue derrotar o primeiro Dragão Branco de Olhos Azuis, mas o fantasma de Seto Kaiba trás o segundo Dragão Branco de Olhos Azuis para a arena. O verdadeiro Seto Kaiba interfere no duelo, infectando o holograma do Dragão Branco de Olhos Azuis com um vírus que faz o dragão perder o poder e ser destruído. O fantasma de Kaiba faz uma revelação: ele é o lado sombrio de Kaiba, que Yugi destruiu após o primeiro duelo com Kaiba, e conseguiu voltar com a ajuda de Pegasus. No final, Yugi consegue derrota-lo e o destrói novamente. Com essa vitória, Yugi já tem seis estrelas. Mas Mokuba continua sendo feito prisioneiro de Pegasus. E Seto Kaiba, que ainda está sendo perseguido, é obrigado a fugir.

Mai e Rex fazem um acordo com Yugi e seus amigos: Rex vai enfrentar Joey e, nesse duelo, Yugi não pode, de forma alguma, ajudar Joey. A partida entre Joey e Rex começa.

Rex trás para o duelo a carta do Dragão Negro de Olhos Vermelhos e acaba apostando ela no duelo. Usando o Mago do Tempo, Joey vence o duelo contra Rex e também ganha o Dragão Negro de Olhos Vermelhos. Joey já tem quatro estrelas. Logo depois, Yugi e seus amigos encontram Bakura, que estuda com eles na escola. Bakura desafia Yugi para um duelo. Mas o espírito do anel do milênio toma o corpo de Bakura e envia todos para o Domínio das Trevas. Yami Yugi surge para enfrentar Yami Bakura.

Yami Yugi vence o duelo contra Yami Bakura, que aparentemente é destruído. Com a vitória, todos voltam para a ilha do Reino dos Duelistas. Eles ouvem alguém gritando e correm para ver o que está acontecendo.

Yugi e seus amigos descobrem que Mai foi derrotada por Panik, um eliminador contratado por Pegasus. Yugi desafia Panik para um duelo, para recuperar as estrelas da Mai e impedir que ela seja desclassificada. Panik usa o Castelo Negro, que impede que Yugi veja as cartas de Panik. Mas Yami Yugi tem um plano para virar o jogo.

Yami Yugi vence o duelo contra Panik, que se mostra um duelista cruel, que age por intimidação. Com a vitória, Yugi recupera as estrelas de Mai e as devolve para ela. Mai se sente em dívida com Yugi.

Seto Kaiba chega a ilha do Reino dos Duelistas para salvar Mokuba. Joey o desafia para um duelo, mas Joey joga mal e Kaiba vence o duelo contra Joey utilizando seu novo sistema de duelos. Kaiba humilha Joey e vai em direção ao castelo de Pegasus.

Com a derrota para Kaiba engasgada, Joey decide sair à procura de um novo adversário, para defender sua própria honra. Ele encontra Bonz, um dos membros da gangue de Bandit Keith. Os dois começam um duelo, dentro de uma caverna.

Bonz usa cartas zumbis contra Joey, mas no final, Joey consegue vencer o duelo contra Bonz. Com isso, Joey já tem oito estrelas. Mas Bandit joga sujo e coloca uma pedra gigantesca na entrada da caverna, prendendo Yugi e seus amigos dentro dela.

Na caverna, Yugi e seus amigos encontram o caminho de um labirinto, que pode levar à uma outra saída da caverna. Mas surgem dois duelistas, chamados Para e Dox, que foram contratados por Pegasus para derrotar Yugi e Joey. Eles vão fazer um duelo entre duplas e, se Yugi e Joey vencerem, conseguirão reunir todas as estrelas necessárias para entrar no castelo de Pegasus e avançar para a fase final. Na partida, Dox joga uma carta que transforma toda a arena de combate em um labirinto.

O duelo entre Joey e Yami Yugi contra Para e Dox continua. Para e Dox trazem para a arena o Guardião dos Portões, um raríssimo monstro, semelhante à Exodia.

Yami Yugi e Joey vencem o duelo contra Para e Dox, usando o Dragão Caveira Negro (uma fusão do Dragão Negro de Olhos Vermelhos com o Rei Caveira). Com a vitória, Yugi e Joey conseguem enfim completar 10 estrelas e encontram a saída da caverna. Eles partem para o castelo de Pegasus. Enquanto isso, Seto Kaiba tenta resgatar Mokuba, mas Pegasus aprisiona a alma de Mokuba e faz um aviso a Kaiba: só poderá resgatá-lo se Kaiba derrotar Pegasus em um duelo. Mas primeiro, Kaiba tem que conquistar o direito de enfrentar Pegasus, e para isso terá que derrotar Yugi num novo duelo.

Na entrada do castelo, Seto Kaiba aparece e desafia Yugi para uma revanche. O duelo entre Kaiba e Yami Yugi começa.

Kaiba usa uma carta de vírus que faz Yugi perder todas as suas cartas com mais de 1500 pontos. Além disso, Kaiba joga em campo a sua carta mais forte: o raríssimo Dragão Supremo de Olhos Azuis (uma fusão de três Dragões Brancos de Olhos Azuis). Yami Yugi parece a beira da derrota, mas pelo avô de Yugi, não pretende desistir.

Yami Yugi consegue virar o jogo e tudo indica que Kaiba vai perder. Kaiba, então, decide fazer uma chantagem para conseguir vencer: ele se pendura em um penhasco e, se Yugi atacar o Dragão Supremo de Olhos Azuis para vencer o duelo, o impacto do ataque pode derrubar Kaiba do penhasco, matando-o. Yami Yugi quer arriscar atacar Kaiba, mas Yugi não. Assim, Yugi fica com medo de Yami Yugi. No final, Yugi acaba cedendo à chantagem e entrega o jogo, fazendo com que Kaiba vença. Kaiba entra no castelo de Pegasus.

Por causa da derrota para Kaiba, Yugi perdeu cinco de suas estrelas e não pode mais entrar no castelo. Mas Mai surge, com 15 estrelas. Ela quer dar cinco dessas estrelas para Yugi, para retribuir o favor dele ter ajudado ela antes. Mas Yugi, sentindo-se com medo de Yami Yugi, não quer jogar. Tea então decide enfrentar Mai no lugar de Yugi, valendo as estrelas. Tea vence o duelo contra Mai (Mai poderia ter ganho, mas queria ajudar Yugi). Com a vitória, Yugi volta a ter 10 estrelas e, assim, ele e seus amigos finalmente entram no castelo de Pegasus.

Ao entrar no castelo, todos vem Kaiba combinar um duelo com Pegasus para salvar alma de Mokuba. O duelo entre Pegasus e Kaiba começa e Pegasus usa o seu olho milênio para ver as cartas de Kaiba, tendo assim grande vantagem no jogo.

Seto Kaiba perde o duelo para Pegasus e acaba aprisionado junto com Mokuba e Salomon.

Os finalistas Yugi, Joey, Mai e Bandit participam de um banquete no castelo de Pegasus. De madrugada, Bandit entra no quarto de Joey e rouba a carta de ingresso que Joey precisa para jogar a fase final.

Começam as semifinais do torneio dos duelistas. A primeira delas será entre Yugi e Mai. Yugi, ainda sentindo medo de Yami Yugi, não deixa que Yami o ajude no duelo. Assim, Yugi começa a jogar mal e Mai vai se aproximando da vitória.

Mai diz para Yugi que ele precisa enfrentar seus medos. Assim, Yugi decide perdoar Yami Yugi e lhe deixar ajudar no duelo contra Mai. Com a ajuda de Yami, Yugi vai aos poucos virando o jogo e consegue vencer usando o Soldado do Lustro Negro (Mai desiste do duelo, por não ter nenhum monstro capaz de derrotar o Soldado do Lustro Negro.)

Vai começar a segunda semifinal, entre Joey e Bandit Keith. Como Joey está sem a sua carta de ingresso, ele corre o risco de ser desclassificado se não encontrar a carta a tempo. Ele não a encontra, mas Mai lhe dá a carta de ingresso dela, e assim ele pode jogar. O duelo entre Joey e Bandit começa e Bandit usa vários monstros máquina. Joey tenta descobrir um jeito de derrota-los, já que eles são imunes à mágica.

Joey vence o duelo contra Bandit. Logo depois da partida, todos descobrem que Bandit não só roubou a carta de Joey como ainda trapaceou durante a partida. Assim, Bandit é expulso da ilha.

Na fase final, Yugi e Joey irão se enfrentar. Mas eles estão com receio, pois são grandes amigos.

Yugi vence o duelo contra Joey e finalmente irá enfrentar Pegasus, mas entrega a carta do prêmio a Joey a fim de salvar Serenity. Joey agradece e deseja a Yugi boa sorte contra Pegasus.

O duelo final entre Yugi e Pegasus finalmente começa. Yugi e Pegasus fazem uma aposta: se Yugi vencer, Pegasus terá que libertar Kaiba, Mokuba e o avô de Yugi. Mas, se Yugi perder, ele vai se juntar aos três e entregar seu enigma do milênio para Pegasus. Enquanto isso, Tristan tenta resgatar o corpo de Mokuba da prisão do castelo. No duelo, Pegasus usa seu olho do milênio para ver as cartas de Yugi e, assim, parece imbatível.

Tristan consegue resgatar o corpo de Mokuba da prisão, mas é perseguido pelos capangas de Pegasus pelo castelo. Enquanto isso, Pegasus continua usando seu olho do milênio para neutralizar as jogadas de Yugi. Cada vez mais, Yugi vai ficando sem saída no jogo.

Yami Bakura ressurge e ajuda Tristan a escapar dos capangas de Pegasus, mas apenas porque quer o corpo de Mokuba. No duelo, Yugi e Yami Yugi tem uma ideia para vencer Pegasus: cada um vai jogar uma carta no campo, sem que o outro veja qual é e, em seguida, vão trocar de lugar. Dessa forma, o olho do milênio do Pegasus não funciona, pois aquele que está jogando não viu qual era a carta em jogo. Assim, Yugi e Yami Yugi conseguem virar o jogo, mas a partida ainda não acabou. Pegasus faz uma revelação: ele planejou todo o campeonato do Reino dos Duelistas para obter o enigma do milênio de Yugi! Em seguida, Pegasus transporta ele mesmo e Yugi para o Domínio das Trevas.

Tristan consegue atirar o anel do milênio de Bakura para longe, aparentemente se livrando de Yami Bakura. Enquanto isso, no duelo, Yugi não consegue resistir à energia do Domínio das Trevas e, aparentemente, morre. Yami Yugi promete vingar Yugi, derrotando Pegasus. Mas, sem Yugi, Pegasus volta a usar o olho do milênio para ver as cartas de Yami, tendo grande vantagem. Além disso, Pegasus joga em campo um monstro raro: a abdicação.

Yami Yugi está a beira da derrota. Mas o avô de Yugi consegue mandar uma mensagem para Yami, lhe pedindo para continuar e para ter certeza de que Yugi ainda está com ele, pois a amizade dos amigos de Yugi mantém o espírito dele vivo. Joey, Tea e Tristan torcem para que Yami consiga vencer. Yami então se conecta com eles e consegue usá-los para bloquear o olho do milênio de Pegasus, impedindo assim que ele veja as cartas de Yami. Mesmo assim, Pegasus dificulta o jogo, transformando a abdicação na Cegueira dos Mil Olhos. Mas Yami usa então a última carta que Yugi deixou, antes de morrer: o Ritual da Magia Negra. Com essa carta, Yami trás para o campo o Mago do Caos das Trevas, que destrói a Cegueira dos Mil Olhos. Assim, Yami vence o duelo contra Pegasus. Com a vitória, Yami e Pegasus voltam para o castelo. Além disso, para alegria de todos, Yugi ressurge.

Após perder para Yugi, Pegasus liberta as almas de Seto Kaiba, Mokuba e Salomon. Então, Yami Bakura reaparece, mais uma vez, e desafia Pegasus para um combate. Pegasus perde e Yami Bakura rouba dele o olho do milênio. Em seguida, Yugi e seus amigos conseguem olhar o diário de Pegasus, e descobrem mais sobre ele: No passado, Pegasus teve uma esposa chamada Cecília, que ele amava muito, mas ela morreu de uma doença grave pouco depois que os dois se casaram. Pegasus estava usando o olho do milênio e sequestrando as almas das pessoas para tentar fazer um feitiço para trazer Cecília de volta à vida. Logo depois, Yugi encontra Shadi, que possui a Chave do Milênio, outra relíquia milenar. Shadi diz que sente que há um ladrão à solta - o ladrão de que ele fala é Yami Bakura, já que ele roubou o olho do milênio de Pegasus - e pede para Yugi ter cuidado, pois esse ladrão virá atrás de Yugi no futuro.

Após receberem os prêmios pela vitória no Reino dos Duelistas (entre eles o prêmio em dinheiro, que Joey vai usar para pagar a operação de Serenity), Yugi e seus amigos voltam para casa. Salomon, o avô de Yugi, finalmente voltou e todos estão muito felizes. Mas surge então uma menina chamada Rebecca, campeã americana de Monstros de Duelo, que acusa o avô de Yugi de ter roubado o Dragão Branco de Olhos Azuis do avô dela. Rebecca duela contra Yugi, apostando a carta do Dragão Branco de Olhos Azuis para o vencedor.

Rebecca vence o duelo contra Yugi (Yugi poderia ter ganho, mas desistiu, pois queria ensinar a Rebecca sobre o coração das cartas). Logo em seguida, Arthur, o avô de Rebecca e amigo de Salomon, chega a arena e explica para Rebecca que Salomon não roubou a carta, o próprio Arthur deu a carta para Salomon anos atrás. Arthur e Salomon, então, contam para todos como eles se conheceram e como Arthur deu para Salomon a carta do Dragão Branco de Olhos Azuis.

(Filler) Kaiba volta à sua empresa e anuncia a demissão dos cinco grandes empresários que tramaram o golpe para tomar a empresa juntamente com Pegasus. Entretanto, eles o enganam, dizendo que fizeram aquilo para ajudarem-no, ele não acredita, mas antes de demiti-los, eles o avisam que desenvolveram e terminaram um jogo de realidade virtual, e que Kaiba deveria testá-lo, porém eles haviam feito uma armadilha para Kaiba, colocando no jogo oponentes capazes de vencer o baralho de Kaiba, e ele é capturado. Mokuba foge e avisa Yugi,Joey,Téa e Tristan, e eles vão ajudar. Yugi, Joey e Mokuba entram no jogo para salvar Kaiba. Lá dentro tentam buscar informações sobre Kaiba, e eles descobrem que precisam chegar as montanhas que ficam além do deserto, que quando eles tentam passar, não conseguem.

(Filler) Eles descobrem que a campeã do torneio é na verdade Mai, que estava testando o jogo para os empresários que trapacearam Kaiba. Eles explicam a situação para Mai, que rouba a carta da Galinha Newatoria, e eles vão até o deserto, onde usam a carta que se materializa, e os ajuda a passar pelo deserto. Depois que terminaram de passar pelo deserto, eles entram em um labirinto, onde encontram uma princesa que Kaiba havia criado para o jogo inspirada em seu irmão Mokuba. Eles escapam do labirinto e vão para o reino da princesa. No castelo, ela fala sobre o Dragão Místico que iria ressuscitar, mas que era necessário sacrificar 2 pessoas para que ele revivesse, e que seu reino e o reino vizinho que deveriam oferecer a oferenda. Eles descobrem que Kaiba foi oferecido pelo outro reino, e a princesa havia se oferecido para isso. A princesa fala sobre o herói lendário, que havia escapado do castelo das sombras usando uma grande nave que estava enterrada.

(Filler) Quando Mokuba chega até o castelo, ele usa o baralho de Kaiba e o ajuda a escapar. Enquanto isso, enquanto voam na aeronave, vários montros atacam Yugi, Joey e Mai, e destroem a nave, mas eles se salvam com seus monstros. Eles começam a passar pelo castelo, até encntrarm Kaiba e Mokuba. Porém, nesse momento, o Dragão Místico consegue reviver mesmo sem o sacrifício, e começa a lutar com eles, e apenas os dragões deles poderiam lutar ali, Kaiba joga o Dragão Branco de Olhos Azuis, Yugi a Maldição do Dragão, Joey o Dragão Negro de Olhos Vermelhos, Mai o Dragão Mascote da Harpía, mas mesmo juntos, eles não conseguem vencer o Dragão Místico. Joey,Mokuba e Mai se sacrificam para salvar Yugi e Kaiba. Mas Yugi tem um plano, e invoca o Soldado do Lustro Negro, e fala para Kaiba invocar o Dragão supremo de Olhos Azuis, e então eles fundem os dois, e conseguem vencer o Dragão Místico, e todos conseguem escapar do jogo em bom estado.

Diferente do mangá, Yugi não troca a corda que segura seu pingente por uma corrente. Uma loja de jogos é inaugurada na cidade. Surge um aluno transferido, Duke Devlin, que vence Joey em um jogo injusto. Joey irrita-se e o desafia a Monstros de Duelo. Duke propõe jogarem apenas com cards recém-tirados dos boosters, e Joey aceita, diferentemente do mangá, onde jogam baralho comum. Perdendo, Joey torna-se o cão de Duke por uma semana. Yugi, irritado, desafia Duke para um duelo. Duke aceita um duelo de Monstros dos Dados-Masmorra. Diferente do mangá, Yugi não derrota Duke em um jogo de baralho comum.

Yugi duela contra Duke Devlin em Monstros dos Dados-Masmorra, mesmo sem nunca ter visto o jogo antes. Promete nunca mais jogar Monstros de Duelo no caso de perder, mas exige que Joey seja libertado caso vença. Duke consegue ampla vitória, apesar de Yugi aos poucos entender como o jogo funciona. Duke conta a Yugi que é o criador do jogo e que havia feito um acordo com Pegasus para desenvolver em conjunto, mas Yugi derrotou-o e então Pegausus nunca mais foi visto. Este então é um duelo de vingança. Diferente do mangá, Yugi não é acusado de roubo, não tem seu Enigma do Milênio confiscado como garantia, não é obrigado a jogar e Duke não joga para vingar seu pai, que teve o rosto queimado supostamente por Solomon.

Yugi tem seu campo bloqueado pelas masmorras de Duke, sendo assim impedido de dimensionar novos dados. Consegue, porém, aproveitar-se da tática de Duke de usar o buraco dimensional para levar monstros rapidamente ao outro lado do campo.

Sabendo que sua jogada poderia ser decisiva para a vitória ou fracasso, Yugi usa o monstro que Pegasus incluiu no jogo, o Mago Negro, e vence. Mais tarde, Yugi descobre que o mais importante é a amizade e torna-se amigo de Duke, que ganha notoriedade graças ao jogo Monstros dos Dados Masmorra.

(Filler) Em casa, Yugi troca a corda de seu Enigma por uma corrente. Andando na rua, Yugi tem seu Enigma do Milênio roubado por um homem com traje negro. Duela com ele sem poder usar o Enigma do Milênio. Descobre que o oponente é Bandit Keith tendo a mente controlada à distância. Bandit está equipado com vários truques de trapaça, e usa monstros fortes nos momentos desejados por causa disto.

(Filler) Os acontecimentos do fim da parte dos Monstros dos Dados Masmorra no mangá acontecem agora de forma diferente: Bakura corta a ligação mental de Keith, encerrando o duelo. Fixa um pedaço de sua alma no em uma peça do Enigma do Milênio. Quando o homem encapuzado tenta novamente controlar a mente de Keith, este causa um incêndio e destrói o Enigma do Milênio. Yugi, não conseguindo retirar o artefato do local aonde estava fixado, monta-o. É resgatado por Joey e Tristan.

Ishizu Ishtar explica a origem de Monstros de Duelo para Kaiba, explica-lhe sobre os Ghouls e o roubo que fizeram dos cards de Deuses Egípcios. Explana sua tática de atrair duelistas de todo o mundo para a cidade com o fim de trazer de volta e recuperar os cards deuses. Ishizu dá o Deus do Obelisco para Seto, para que este possa recuperar os outros dois deuses roubados. Usa um poder holográfico de sua relíquia inexistente no mangá. Yugi, conversando com seu alter ego, descobre que este não possui recordação alguma de sua existência. Diferente do mangá, Yugi não passa tempo algum no hospital, então não é informado sobre a exibição egípcia no museu da cidade.

Os acontecimentos do capítulo 148, que relata os testes feitos por Seto com o Deus do Obelisco e a próxima geração de Discos de Duelo, são pulados. O alter ego de Yugi tem um encontro forçado por Yugi com Téa. Esta entra em um desafio de dança de fliperama contra Johnny Steps e vence. Téa convence Yugi a visitar o museu para conhecer mais sobre si. Diferentemente do mangá, Johnny Steps pede uma revanche em Monstros de Duelo, e Yugi enfrenta-o, atrasando a visita ao museu para a noite, enquanto no mangá ocorre ainda de dia.

O teste da nova geração de discos de duelo e do Deus do Obelisco, no mangá anteriores à batalha de dança, ocorrem agora no anime, com alterações: os discos lançam os projetores com foguetes e o robô de batalha não é andróide. Além disso, há no anime menções inexistentes a um sistema de satélites dando suporte aos duelos globalmente, e o duelo é estendido. Diferente do mangá, os cards da mão não são materializados na frente do jogador, e o computador usa Polimerização para fundir os três Dragões Brancos. A história do anime pula então para o capítulo 150 do mangá, onde Yugi descobre o início sobre quem é a partir da pedra em exibição. Ishizu Ishtar avisa-lhe que um inimigo possuidor de uma Relíquia do Milênio chagará à cidade, e que uma grande batalha ocorrerá; uma batalha para Yugi recuperar suas memórias.

Joey decide participar da Cidade das Batalhas, então vai com Anzu, Tristan e Yugi à loja que vende os discos de duelo requeridos para ter o direito de participar. Yugi, conversando com Téa, revela saber que há algum outro motivo para seu alter ego querer participar da Cidade das Batalhas, pois pelo que o conhece sabe que seu alter ego acredita que todos os 40 cards são importantes, e cards raros não fazem muito se não formarem uma tática sólida. Téa sente que, devido à proximidade dos dois Yugis, o segredo não poderá ser mantido por muito tempo. Na loja, o atendente pesquisa em um banco de dados de duelistas por informações sobre Yugi e Joey, pois apenas duelistas de nível 5 ou superior podem ter o disco, que é dado pela Corporação Kaiba. Joey não estava classificado, mas o lojista interessou-se pelo Dragão Negro de Olhos Vermelhos e alterou os dados, classificando Joey e passando seus dados a Ghouls.

Yugi passa a noite toda montando o novo deck com seu alter ego. No fim, este decide contar que está participando do torneio para se encontrar, e Yugi, por confiar nele, não faz perguntas. Em um telão gigantesco em um dirigível, Seto explica as regras do torneio, diferente do mangá, onde explica em um telão da Praça de Domino. Joey encontra o Ghoul que roubou se Dragão observando os jogadores na praça. Yugi, ao avistar Joey, vai falar com ele. Ao saber que aquela pessoa é um ghoul, ladrão e falsificador de cards, enfurece-se e decide duelar contra ele. O Ghoul consegue juntar quatro partes do Exodia quando Yugi descobre que ele planeja invocá-lo.

Yugi derrota o deck Exodia do Ghoul ao usar um combo composto pelo card de magia Espada Força da Luz e a armadilha Corrente da Destruição, que é atrasado no anime, apenas, pela magia Espadas da Luz Reveladora do Ghoul. Quando o Ghoul perde, tem seu corpo tomado por Marik, que apresenta-se a Yugi e explica seus objetivos. Yugi então pega o Dragão Negro de Olhos Vermelhos de Joey e devolve-lhe, mas este recusa: montou um novo deck que possui o Mago do Tempo por card raro, e planeja treinar com este para não tornar-se tão dependente de um card apenas, como era antes. Yugi rasga todos os cards falsificados do Ghoul, antes de ir embora, coisa que não ocorre no mangá.

Espa Roba, um duelista que diz ter poderes paranormais, derrota Rex Raptor. Joey, almejando tornar-se um duelista melhor, desafia Espa Roba para um duelo. Diferente do mangá, Rex Raptor some sem perguntar o que Joey fez com o Dragão Negro de Olhos Vermelhos. Assustado com a possibilidade de seu oponente ter poderes psíquicos, Joey começa invocando um monstro de seis estrelas, que é destruído imediatamente por não cumprir a regra de sacrifício. Quando Espa Roba diz que Joey tem dois cards Graça do Dado, sendo que este na realidade tinha um Caveira do Dado e um Graça do Dado, Joey percebe que isto se deve ao fato de somente a palavra "Dado" estar visível na sua mão, tendo o resto do card oculto por outro disposto em sua frente. Joey deduz que há pessoas bisbilhotando sua mão. Usa os dois em um combo que elimina o Demônio Megacyber de Espa. Invoca o Jacaré de Espada e ataca Espa.

O Jacaré de Espada de Joey é destruído por Jinzo, após Espa Roba equipá-lo com Amplificador. Diferente do mangá, Joey usa um combo de Dragão Bebê e Mago do Tempo para ter o Dragão Milenar e enferrujar Jinzo, mas fracassa, pois Jinzo é revestido por um metal especial. Assim, o Dragão Milenar é destruído por Jinzo. Tristan continua narrando o duelo para Serenity, diferente do mangá, onde isto não ocorre. O que também não ocorre no mangá, Téa e Solomon aparecem. Joey usa o card de magia Bode Expiatório, o que no mangá ocorre antes de Roba usar a magia Amplificador. A pedido de Serenity, a enfermeira conta-lhe o verdadeiro rumo do duelo. Roba invoca Barreira Refletora, e fazendo um ataque duplo, destrói dois bodes de Joey. Diferente do mangá, Téa conta a Joey que Shizuka o está assistindo, o que não ocorre no mangá. Joey invoca Aranha Roleta, que ao fazer Jinzo atacar a Barreira, destrói os dois monstros, abaixando a vida de Roba para 0

Mokuba interrompe uma briga que estava ocorrendo em um beco do distrito norte por causa de desacordos em relação ao ante. Como o duelista encrenqueiro desrespeitou Mokuba, Seto surge e o desafia para um duelo. Diferente do mangá, Seto não rasga o ante do duelista encrenqueiro. Antes do duelo, Seto oferece quantos cards raros de sua mala o duelista quiser para fortalecer seu deck. Diferente do mangá, Seto não oferece sua mala como ante. Vence o oponente facilmente com Obelisco. Marik é informado que Seto possui um card deus, e diferente do mangá, onde o fato a seguir não ocorre, é mostrado um flash back do encontro que Marik teve com sua irmã Ishizu no Egito.

Diferente do mangá, Arkana fala sobre os motivos que o levaram a integrar os Ghouls e Téa e Solomon passam o dia correndo pela cidade numa tentativa de encontrar Yugi. Arkana revive seu Mago Negro, obrigando os duelistas a tentarem vencer com mágicas e armadilhas. Com os quatro espaços destinados a estes cards já ocupados, eles são ativados sucessivamente, até a sequência encerrar-se com os dois magos ressuscitados e nenhum ponto de vida perdido. Arkana usa o card de contra-armadilha Correntes do Pesadelo para prender o Mago Negro de Yugi em uma cruz. Com isto, Arkana ataca Yugi diretamente com seu Mago Negro. Yugi evoca o Grande Escudo Guardna, mas Arkana usa a magia Ectoplamsdor, que sacrifica os monstros para seu espírito atacar diretamente o adversário. A alma do Boneco Maléfico da Morte acerta Yugi diretamente, mas a do Mago Negro é bloqueada pela alma de seu Mago Negro, que deliberadamente se sacrificou para proteger Yugi.

Téa, Mokuba, Solomon e Tristan passam o dia correndo na cidade em busca de Yugi. Arkana novamente cita sua amada, o que não ocorre no mangá. Com a magia Balança das Sombras, Arkana destrói todos os monstros no campo de Yugi: Grande Escudo Guardna e Gazelle, o rei das bestas místicas. Arkana usa então a magia Cortina da Magia Negra, que invoca um conjurador de sua mão, ao custo de metade dos pontos de vida. Em seguida, usa a magia Flechas antimagia para destruir os cards virados para baixo de Yugi, deixando o campo deste vazio. Quando Arkana ordena o ataque à Yugi por seu Mago Negro, Yugi usa a magia Cortina da Magia Negra para invocar a Feiticeira Negra. Arkana, percebendo que ela é 500 pontos mais fraca que seu Mago, prossegue com o ataque. Entretanto, a Feiticeira vence, pois é fortalecida pelas almas dois dois Magos já mortos.

Joey tem seu disco de duelo roubado por um garotinho que lhe pediu autógrafo, diferente do mangá, aonde ele tem o disco roubado enquanto come em um restaurante. Diferente do mangá, onde Tristan havia viajado e Joey pega o garoto, Tristan agarra o garoto para que este devolva o disco de duelo. Diferente do mangá, Solomon não recomenda que Joey confira o deck para saber se algum card seu foi roubado. Também diferente do mangá, Téa não pergunta a Joey se a operação de Serenity terminou bem e Joey não pergunta a ela sobre Tristan. O garoto corre até Weevil Underwood e lhe dá o pronto do serviço, contando que inseriu dois cards no deck de Joey e pedindo o card raro prometido. Weevil lhe dá um card comum, o ameaça e vai embora, diferente do mangá, onde espirra um superinseticida nos olhos do garoto.

A Mariposa de Weevil é destruída, e Weevil invoca a Rainha Inseto. Joey usa Escudo de braço mágico para fazer Weevil atacar seu próprio monstro. Em seguida, Joey invoca Gearfried, o cavaleiro de ferro, que por ser feito deste material, é imune ao Suicídio Parasita. Com este, passa pela Barreira Contra-Inseto e ataca uma larva da rainha. Weevil usa um combo do monstro Soldado Ari com a magia Multiplicação de Formigas para aumentar o poder de sua Rainha absurdamente. Joey usa a armadilha Ladrão de Tumbas para reaver a magia de Weevil, Inseticida. Weevil chora ao ver seu card mais poderoso exterminado. Diferente do mangá, Serenity aparece.

Ishizu, Bakura, Téa, Tristan, Joey e Solomon aparecem, e Mokuba e Seto não.Marik ordena que o pantomimo duele contra Yugi. Diferente do mangá, ele o faz enquanto está indo de barco em direção a um porto próximo a Domino, e não na moto que pilota a partir do porto em direção a Yugi. Yugi avisa a seu alter ego que é preciso tomar cuidado, pois o pantomimo tem o card deus Slifer, o Dragão dos Céus, ao que seu alter ego responde que derrotará deus. Diferente do mangá, Marik não explica que controla as pessoas ao mexer na imaginação destas de conseguir ouvir “deus”: torna-se o deus para esta pessoa. Diferente do mangá também, Marik não conta que programou o pantomimo a matar Yugi quando este perdesse. No duelo, Marik usa um deck voltado exclusivamente a invocar Osíris o mais rapidamente possível.

Kaiba comunica-se através de sua maleta com a Corporação e recebe a informação que nenhum deus foi localizado, diferente do mangá, onde isto ocorre antes de Marik decidir ir para Domino. Marik pergunta como Yugi se sente trancafiado, e diz que a vida dele é toda assim: preso no destino dos guardiões de tumbas. Marik invoca Slifer, que paralisa Yugi de medo. Marik avisa que Slifer tem ataque infinito. Yugi vê que o poder de Slifer é mil vezes o número de cards na mão de quem o invoca, e deduz que o poder máximo é de 7000, mas Marik possui a magia Cards Infinitos, que remove o limite de cards da mão do jogador. O monstro Buster Blader de Yugi ganha 500 pontos de ataque por cada monstro no campo oponente. Yugi lamenta por não poder atacar Slifer naquela rodada, pois enquanto este possuía 3000 pontos de ataque, Buster Blader possuía 3100.

Seto diz para Yugi matar deus sem arrependimento, se este ficar em seu caminho. Mokuba e Seto assistem uma rodada, e Mokuba conclui que o poder de Slifer é infinito. Ouvindo isto, Seto descobre a fraqueza do deus, mas, diferente do mangá, não avisa Yugi de que nada é infinito: Yugi deduz simultaneamente sem motivo aparente. Ao deduzir, avisa Marik que o duelo acabará em uma rodada, e compra o card-chave de sua estratégia. Joga então a magia Monstro que Renasce, ressuscitando Buster Blader em modo de ataque. Isto ativa a magia permanente Card do Retorno Seguro, fazendo Marik comprar três cards, elvando o ataque de Slifer para 13000. Yugi ataca Slifer com Buster Blader, mas isto ativa a armadilha Defensor Geléia, e o ataque é transferido para a Geléia que Revive.

Yugi, buscando Joey pela cidade, tem o caminho obstruído por uma dupla de Ghouls, que o desafiam para um duelo. Yugi é obrigado a aceitar, pois se recusasse Joey seria imediatamente morto. Entretanto, tentam atrasar Yugi o máximo possível ao tentarem decidir quem desafiaria Yugi primeiro, ao jogar Jankenpon em que sempre empatavam. Seto chega e propõe um duelo em dupla, e logo a seguir alerta Yugi que não o está ajudando, está apenas eliminando Ghouls, já que este é o objetivo secundário de seu torneio. Diferente do mangá, o duelo em duplas leva mais de uma jogada. Seto derrota os dois oponentes simultaneamente ao jogar Obelisco. Marik continua trafegando de moto, mas usa capacete, enquanto no mangá não.

A disputa através das relíquias realizada por Bakura e Marik encerra-se, mas Bakura não corta o braço. Joey compra a magia Polimerização e a usa para fundir o Dragão Bebê e o Jacaré de Espada, originando o Dragão Jacaré de Espada. No mangá o faz para que seu guerreiro, que não pode nadar, possa voar sobre as águas e atacar Mako diretamente, mas no anime o faz sem motivo algum. Mako joga monstros no campo, mas Joey não consegue vê-los, pois o campo é de água. Percebe que Mako está usando novamente a tática que usou contra Yugi no Reino dos Duelistas: esconde os monstros na água e ataca de lá. Porém, não se preocupa, pois seu monstro voa. Mako usa a armadilha permanente Muralha do Tornado, anulando os danos causados pelo ataque.

Serenity liga para Joey para informá-lo que quer vê-lo duelas nas finais. Tristan, diferente do mangá, se oferece para buscá-la, e vai embora. Marik se apresenta para Joey, Téa e Solomon como Namu, ao trazer Bakura com o braço ferido, que, diferente do mangá, não tem sangue escorrendo e caindo pelo chão, apenas um pano avermelhado. Solomon pega um táxi para levá-lo ao hospital. Diferente do mangá, onde duas pessoas na rua batem em Namu por este querer impedi-los de pegar o disco de duelo de Bakura, que alegam ter sido roubado deles, e então Joey bate nele, Joey e Téa rapidamente se dizem amigos de Namu e vão passear juntos, mas são espancados pelos ghouls.

Téa e Mokuba ficam presos em um galpão. Yugi percebe que Lumis não joga nenhum monstro: sua função é apenas enfraquecer o inimigo com magias e armadilhas para que Umbra ataque. Tanto Yugi quanto Seto estavam prontos para sacrificar monstros, quando Lumis ativa a armadilha permanente Máscara da Restrição, impedindo o oferecimento de monstros como tributo por Yugi e Seto. Diferente do mangá, Umbra e Lumis usam microfones dentro das máscaras para conversarem entre si. Diferente do mangá, Seto usa o card inexistente Anel da Defesa, fazendo Umbra usar a magia Transferência de Magia, também inexistente. Yugi salva Seto do ataque do Abismo Reluzente que zeraria seus pontos de vida com o card Multiplicação, em que ele multiplica seus Kuribohs.

Kaiba diz a Yugi que descobriu o ponto principal dos duelos: quão bem se usa o parceiro para seus próprios fins. Como a Besta Mascarada tem mais pontos de ataque que o Dragão Branco de Olhos Azuis, Kaiba percebe que há o risco dele ser destruído e voltar ao cemitério. Yugi diz que Seto deve atacar, e este confia e o faz, destruindo a besta. Yugi explica que, ao enviar sua mão para o cemitério, Gilfer, o impiedoso foi junto, e sua habilidade especial ativada do cemitério o permite reduzir o ataque dos monstros em campo naquele momento. Umbra invoca um monstro inexistente, diferente do mangá, onde evoca Nuvia, a perversa. Ataca o Dragão com ela, e Lumis usa a magia Máscara da Fraqueza para fazer Nuvia mais forte. Yugi usa a armadilha Painel de Fenda Mística para colocar a máscara em Nuvia, e ela é destruída.

Lumis decide matar Yugi com a Fera Mascarada de Guardius, mas Seto o convence a atacar seu Dragão. Com isto, Yugi invoca Gama, o Guerreiro Ímã, e por ter os três guerreiros ímã em campo, os une para formar Valkyrion, o guerreiro ímã. Kaiba, sedento por vingança pela destruição de seu dragão, ordena que Yugi ataca, mas este sente que os inimigos não temem, e supõe que a Fera Mascarada tem algum poder oculto. Como Yugi se recusa a atacar enquanto Kaiba não se acalmar, este olha para sua mão, onde está Obelisco, e lamenta não poder invocá-lo tanto por não ter os sacrifícios necessários quanto pela Máscara da Restrição proibir sacrifícios. Percebe outro card, de magia, a Troca de Alma. Vê que é possível trazer seu deus ao campo, e percebe que o poder da união é muito maior que apenas Valkyrion.

Yugi conta a Seto o que sabe sobre Marik. O resto do episódio é um enorme flashback filler.

Odion, servo de Marik que não está sob efeito do Cetro do Milênio, avisa Marik que já coletou doze cards quebra-cabeça e vários cards raros. Entrega seis dos quebra-cabeças para Marik, fazendo ambos estarem classificados para a final. Tristan liga para Téa, mas diferente do mangá, onde ela atende mas não responde nada, entretanto permitindo que Tristan ouça os sons do cais, o celular quebrado de Téa caído na rua não atende a ligação, e Tristan fica sem saber onde ela está. Também diferente do mangá, Tristan e Serenity são cercados por ghouls, que querem usá-los de marionetes também. Diferente do mangá, Téa não fica controlada com uma cápsula de veneno na boca, que seria engolida caso qualquer coisa no duelo saísse do normal: ela fica com a mente livre, mas amarrada em uma cadeira sob um contêiner erguido por um guindaste.

Diferente do mangá, Tristan, Duke, e Serenity brigam com pessoas na rua, ao invés de irem diretamente encontrar Joey ao pegarem carona no Peugeot de Mai Valentine. Yugi troca de lugar com seu outro eu. Ao sacar o Dragão Negro de Olhos Vermelhos, usa o card de magia Troca, permitindo assim que Joey pegue o dragão para si, mas ele não o faz. Yugi sabe então que pode usar este card para trazer o orgulho de duelista de seu amigo de volta. Usando o Guerreiro Foguete, Joey arranca um braço, rasga a asa e diminui o ataque do Dragão, causando dores em seu próprio corpo. Neste momento, Yugi pendura no pescoço de Joey seu Enigma, pedindo que seu amigo o guarde quando ele mesmo morrer.

Joey não consegue lançar fora o enigma de Yugi, e age diferente das ordens de Marik, seguindo a honra de duelista instintivamente. Serenity, Tristan, Duke e Mai chegam no local do duelo, mas ficam parados.

Seto não aguenta mais não fazer nada para tentar salvar os outros, diferente do mangá, onde não aguenta mais ver seu irmão Mokuba com uma faca no pescoço. Joey saca o card Meteoro da Destruição, que certamente faria Yugi perder, diferente do mangá, onde Marik ordena que Joey fique parado esperando o fim do duelo, de forma que tanto ele quanto Yugi morram. Joey começa a se lembrar de todos os torneios que participou desde o Reino dos Duelistas, diferente do mangá, onde somente se lembra após Yugi citar isto. Diferente do mangá, onde Joey continua duelando por instinto, Marik ordena que Joey jogue o card Meteoro da Destruição, mas Joey se recusa. Isto faz Marik controlar inteiramente sua mente, mas, quando Joey vê que seu amigo corria perigo, destruiu a consciência de Marik que estava em sua mente. Seto lança um card na mão do Ghoul que estava com o controle do detonador da bomba que lançaria o contêiner em Téa.

(Filler) Bakura sai do hospital, pois em meio a seus pesadelos decidiu duelar. Encontra os subordinados de Bandit Keith que tiveram suas estrelas roubadas no Reino dos Duelistas, e duela com um deles. Ganha, classifica-se para as finais e condena a alma deles ao inferno.

(Filler) Mai para o carro, pois é necessário seguir a pé em um trecho próximo ao estádio onde ocorrerão as finais. Atravessam uma cidade em construção da Corporação Kaiba, quando repentinamente uma limousine sai de dentro de um, arrebentando a parede. Um ator de Hollywood desce, e afirma para Mai que cumprirá a promessa que lhe fez sobre o casamento. Mai lembra-se de ter duelado contra ele uma vez, e de ele ficar terrivelmente apaixonado por ela ao perder. Apesar do risco de perder o lugar nas finais, todos ficam assistindo o duelo de Mai. O ator perde o duelo, e neste momento descobre-se que um de seus monstros de holograma na verdade era um ator, que sequestra Mai ao jogá-la dentro de um saco de cordas e sair voando em sua pipa-a-jato. Joey salva Mai, e o grupo segue para o estádio novamente.

Todos reúnem-se no Estádio da Cidade Dominó, o local que os cards quebra-cabeça indicam como onde ocorrerão as finais. Lá, recebem um cartão de identificação. Marik conversa com Odion, e revela seus planos em relação ao Enigma do Milênio e a Yugi. Odion finge ser Marik, e Marik finge ser Namu. Bakura aparece, preocupando seus amigos, que achavam melhor ele voltar ao hospital. Todos embarcam, exceto a oitava duelista, Ishizu Ishtar, que entra apenas nos últimos segundos antes da decolagem. Seto obriga Yugi a acrescentar Slifer em seu deck. Todos descansam e preparam-se para os duelos que estão por vir.

O primeiro sorteio dos participantes ocorre, com os números alterados em relação ao mangá, e então Bakura e Yugi duelam. Yugi destrói facilmente três monstros de Bakura, levando-o quase à derrota. Bakura, entretanto, diz que esta era sua tática, pois é necessário ter no mínimo três monstros no cemitério para invocar a Necrófaga das Trevas, apesar de não explicar porquê eles necessariamente deveriam estar em modo de ataque, diferente do mangá, onde ele diz ser um requisito. Diferente do mangá, a boneca quebrada que a Necromante segura foi apagada. A Necromante é destruída com um combo da Feiticeira Negra com o card de magia Fórmula Mágica. Diferente do mangá, onde Bakura fala sobre o efeito especial da Necromante, relativo à boneca que foi apagada, Bakura diz que a morte da Necromante era requisito para que ele pudesse jogar o card de campo Domínio das Trevas.

Bakura joga dois cards de magia: Tabuleiro do Destino, um tabuleiro de Ouija, que uma vez por rodada acende uma letra de uma palavra que possui cinco, e que ao final deste período fará Yugi perder, e Portal das Trevas, que impede Yugi e atacar com mais de um monstro por rodada. Diferente do mangá, o Tabuleiro não é manejado pelo espírito da Necrófaga, mas por uma mão apenas, tirando a justificativa para a necrófaga ter sido destruída. O Espírito Malvado do Domínio das Trevas possui um monstro de Yugi por rodada, negando o ataque deste e causando prejuízo equivalente à metade dos pontos de ataque à vida de Yugi, e acrescentando este mesmo valor à vida de Bakura.

Bakura destroi a Necrófaga, fazendo voltar o Tabuleiro com as letras e os espíritos em campo. Yugi compra Slifer, e o invoca. Marik, dentro de Bakura, conversa com o alter ego de Bakura e o convence a libertar o Bakura normal, pois assim Yugi não teria coragem de atacar e perderia. O alter ego de Bakura faz isto, mas volta atrás, pois precisa de seu recipiente, e não quis arriscá-lo ali. Bakura perde rindo e dizendo que apesar disto ele voltaria. Téa, por ordem de Marik, coleta o Anel do Milênio e o guarda secretamente, diferente do mangá, onde o coleta na frente de Yugi, prometendo ocultar de forma que Bakura não encontre.

(Filler) Diferente do mangá, Shadi aparece, salvando Tristan e Duke Devlin que estavam caindo do dirigível, e contando a Yugi como a equipe de produção dos cards de deuses egípcios de Pegasus foi morta pela fúria dos deuses.

Os sorteados para o próximo duelo são Joey e Marik, que na verdade é Odion disfarçado. Diferente do mangá, este aparece com uma réplica do Cetro do Milênio. Para que ninguém duvidasse, Marik ordenou que o ataque fosse parado, e Joey derrotado pelo Dragão Alado de Rá. Odion lembra-se de sua história com a família Ishtar até o momento do ritual. Diferente do mangá, toda a violência é cortada, e a história é um pouco mudada.

Odion retira o Dragão Alado de Rá da arca e ordena um ataque direto aos pontos de vida de Joey. Entretanto, Rá enfurece-se e não o obedece. Em seguida, raios começam a cair do céu, e acertam os dois oponentes. Como ambos ficaram inconscientes, foi determinado que o primeiro a se levantar em até 5 minutos seria o vencedor. Joey, com o apoio dos amigos, se levanta. Odion começa a se levantar, mas cai, sentido-se fracassado, indigno de controlar Rá e de integrar os Guardiões da Tumba. Sem Odion para ajudar Marik, o lado maligno deste último desperta.

Mai pergunta se estava no sonho que Joey teve de seus amigos o ajudando, após ser atingido por um raio. Joey nega. Mais lembra-se de quando duelava sozinha e de como isto era seu orgulho. Decide então que não precisa de Joey e seus amigos. Marik fica ao lado da cama de Odion com o cetro erguido no ar, prometendo enviá-lo para o Domínio das Trevas, diferente do mangá, onde corta um médico na sala e aponta a lâmina da base do cetro para o pescoço de Odion. Como vê o sorteio na tela, decide deixar para depois. Mai é sorteada para duelar contra Marik. Este transforma o duelo em um jogo das trevas.

O duelo de Mai contra Marik prossegue. Mai lembra-se de sua vida solitária, e esquece Joey. Yugi invade a mente dela e conta para ela que o mundo de ilusão onde ela está é que não a permite ver que seus amigos a estão apoiando, e que basta vencer para tudo voltar ao que era antes.
