Discuss Les Envoyés d'Ailleurs

I'm withholding my rating for now, because I don't know where this is going. But for now I find it interesting enough to keep watching. If I had to guess, both "opposing" organizations are actually run by the same people, maybe to get folks to realize how fruitless polarization is to society.

I think you're right, and I think we're about to find out the details. I'm at least a week behind schedule in watching episodes; and, like you, I'm hesitant to rate it yet. So far it's intriguing--sort of "New Age meets the Human Potential Movement"--but it may still disappoint, or be one of those series that just plays coy and keeps teasing us along, but never really going anywhere.

*** WARNING: SPOILERS***

Well, Moon Doggie, you were basically right w/your early guess. The series was interesting for a while, but eventually became sort of boring and coy, like I suspected it might become. My judgment is that it was basically a self-indulgent vanity project run by Jason Segel, who I think is a better actor than a writer.

We didn't need to slog through nine chaotic episodes to reach the conclusion that was obvious from the beginning but not revealed until the finale: There is more that we have in common than sets us apart from one another. Big deal. Kumbaya.

And I didn't really need to hear about his life crises. That's something he could have just resolved quietly via a good therapist. It somewhat feels like he didn't have a clear vision for where the story was going, so he just punted and stepped in at the end to make it about himself. There seems to be some vague possibility that there will be more to come--perhaps some sort of season 2--but I really hope not.

I'm sure the usual pseudo-intellectuals will read deep meaning into the series and tell the rest of us that we "just don't get it," but that doesn't change the simple fact that this is an awfully long, roundabout way to go to get its message across--a message that was pretty obvious from the very beginning. Meh.
