Discuss Sherlock Holmes

Item: Sherlock Holmes

Language: en-US

Type of Problem: Duplicate

Extra Details: This series does not exist as such, they are multiple series, with the same cast but with their own individual seasons and titles.

Each series had a different name: the adventures of sherlock holmes, the return of sherlock holmes, the case-book of sherlock holmes and the memoirs of sherlock holmes. And like I said, each of these series have their own seasons.

EDIT: To make a stronger case.

If for example after season 2 of House they had relaunched it several years later under the name of "The marvellous return of Dr. House", nobody would dream of putting it together with the original title as a third season, but instead would create a separate series with said title. This is the logic under which I am operating for this claim, as I mentioned prior, these were all launched with different titles.

I believe the error stems from the fact that they have been distributed as a dvd collection as well as separately, and the dvd collection may have grouped all seasons of each series in the same cd. The confusion may also arise from a pirated collection of these series that incorrectly lists these different series as seasons instead.

TL;DR There is a much stronger case for keeping them separate, in my opinion, than lumping them all incoherently into a single series that never existed:

  1. The different titles they have clearly delineates that they aren't the same series.
  2. It is also chronologically coherent to consider them separate series, as each of these series have several years between each one was released.
  3. IMDB has them separate as I am suggesting, I believe it will lead to confusion for consumers of both websites to not follow the most technically correct specifications for these series. Also it makes for redundancy and issues with IMDB IDs.
  4. This error stems from illegal copies of these series or a modern DVD collection release, not their original release.
  5. Some TV movies totally independent of any of the series are also lumped in here for no reason (The hound of the Baskervilles).
  6. While more comfortable to jam all of the series into one, it simply isn't accurate, and I would imagine the standard for a database is historical accuracy, not comfort.

The guidelines do state that we have to follow the format of the original release for sequels/revivals. But it can be difficult to find how older series were released. We need some kind of proof.

Yeah, they have since been released as one series on DVD and digitally.

IMDB has them separate as I am suggesting, I believe it will lead to confusion for consumers of both websites to not follow the most technically correct specifications for these series. Also it makes for redundancy and issues with IMDB IDs.

FYI TMDb uses both IMDb and TVDB ID. The former tends to split everything, and the latter to lump all sequels together.

Based on the end of this page and the start of this one, it seems that ITV has organised a party for the 10th anniversary of the series. Here is an extract of this party when Jeremy Brett says that he will stop. Speaking of the 10th anniversary of the series tend to think that this should be considered as a single series.

"The different titles" is not an argument in one or the other direction as many series have season titles.

Chronologically, there is only one gap : "The return of Sherlock Holmes" end in 1988 and "The Case Book of Sherlock Holmes" start in 1991 (this gap is due to the stage play of "The Secret of Sherlock Holmes"). In the other cases:

  • "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes" end in 1986 and "The Return of Sherlock Holmes" start in 1987 : no gap.

  • "The Case Book of Sherlock Holmes" end in 1993 and "The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes" start in 1994 : no gap.
