The above quote (or paraphrase, it's been awhile) is from Leader Desslok, one of the greatest sci-fi animated villians of all time-- much more classy and refined as compared to the other major villain in the Star Blazers universe (Prince Zordar of the Comet Empire), in my humble opinion.
Anyone else remember this show? It's been some time since I've seen it, but back in the late 1970s and early '80s I watched it constantly in reruns, and years later I bought all of the episodes on VHS and watched them over and over, again.
The VHS tapes were my first exposure to the third series in the program, the Bolar Wars saga, which was not shown on TV where I grew up. I was not impressed with that series at all-- fans of the show will recall that all of the voice actors were new, and the only character voice they even got close to the original was Desslok's --and if I ever purchase this show on DVD I will only buy the Gamilon and Comet Empire series.
Star Blazers was groundbreaking, not only for the maturity of its storylines, but also for the rather bleak tone of a show that was marketed in the United States as a kids' program:
In the Gamilon series, the Earth has been largely destroyed by alien nuclear meteorites, and during the numerous space battles throughout the show, characters on both sides are regularly killed off . . . as opposed to other animated shows of the time, like GI Joe, where parachuting pilots are regularly shown when planes are shot down.
(Robotech, arriving not long after Star Blazers, would be another violent cartoon, though I still prefer Star Blazers).
Just my random thoughts to get the board going for this awesome show.
