Tyskland är en nation som drabbats av ett förödmjukande nederlag i det 1:a världskriget. På väg ur en förlamande ekonomisk depression ser man en man som kan få hopp och värdighet att återuppstå. Den mannen är Adolf Hitler.

I Östeuropa rullar den nazistiska maskinens fulla kraft på – men i Storbritannien lägger sig ett oroligt lugn över nationen. Det är det "falska" kriget, med ljudet av avlägsna vapen som dånar olycksbådande vid horisonten.

Frankrike upptäcker att de är bedrövligt dåligt förberedda för modern krigföring när den nazistiska krigsmaskinen lätt går runt Maginotlinjen. Storbritannien drar sig tillbaka och förbereder sig för en invasion.

Hitler vänder slutligen sina stridsvagnar mot Sovjetunionen. Efter en rad framgångsrika segrar dröjer sig tyskarna kvar och den hårda vintern tar ett järngrepp.

I krig sedan 1931 på det kinesiska fastlandet hoppas japanerna på lätta segrar över britterna och holländarna. Den 7 december 1941 gör Japan sin ökända attack mot amerikanska flottbasen Pearl Harbour på Hawaii.

I USA är amerikanerna splittrade mellan att bekämpa japanerna eller nazisterna. Hitler löser problemet genom att förklara krig mot USA.

I två års tid slåss den 8:e armén och Rommels Afrikakår i Nordafrikas ödemarker. Slutligen vänder stridslyckan vid El Alamein.

I ett krig av högteknologi och djuriskt mod, slåss de tyska ubåtarna mot de allierade och jagar dem i flock.

I två år kämpar den sovjetiska armén nästan ensamma mot tyskarna. Efter en av historiens största strider på land överlever och triumferar nationen – men med en förlust av inte mindre än tjugo miljoner av sitt folk.
