The first season goes full tilt on a long-arc B story about a hapless junior ad exec wrongly assumed to be an alcoholic and being terrorized by his overly zealous and scary sponsor. That plot line was redundant with all the obvious beats, but the actor who played Tom was one of the more engaging ones in that wildly uneven first season. Then in season 2 he's never mentioned again and a throwaway line is given about the sponsor (Cutter). WTF? That was an awful lot of time spent spinning wheels over something that immediately didn't matter and no pay-off. At least they got more mileage out of Will Sasso's character having an improbable secret affair with Sam's ex (which, too, ultimately didn't matter). I like Livingston although he seems to always play just one role, but here the acerbic nastiness of Sam is off-putting in a way that similar sociopathic behavior is endearing on other shows (Bojack, Sunny, League, Mick, etc.). Sam is simply too insufferable an ass to be the series lead, and not even Livingston can save the show from itself.
