Discuss The Wheel of Time

Hoping the rewrite holds up for the next 15 books.

Such wild potential, can't wait.

You think that this will be around that long?

I'd like to see them make it to the end. They're chopping plenty.

Not sure how it's hitting for non-readers, it's growing on me though.

“Non reader” here. It has drawn me in, for sure. Great sets, costumes, and acting. The characters are all very likable with charisma galore. Love the diversity, too. Don’t see it going more than a few seasons, tho.

As a reader, this series verges on offensive.

I get your point Faile (the multitude of points this entails really), but am enjoying the interpretation. I have a few minor ticks, especially constantly trying to shoehorn the "the dragon could be a man or woman, who knows" lgb crap that basically undermines the whole premise of the entire plot and universe..

I haven't read any of the books, but I'm familiar with the basic concept of The Wheel Of Time Universe. I started out by watching the first three episodes of season 2 (which Amazon Prime made available through a 30 day free trial offer, those sneaky bas****s), I thought "Why not?" watched them, and was amazed. The locations are breathtakingly gorgeous, the art direction is superb, costumes are great, and I loved the Special Effects.

After watching the first 3 episodes of season two and signing up for the free 30 day free trial offer so I could watch season one, I have to say that the acting styles of the main cast vary widely. I'm not going to post my opinion about the actors until I watch a couple of more episodes, but I like what I've seen of the show so far.

Second half of the second season is a big improvement over what we saw before. First season didn't leave much impression on me and I was considering to stop watching this. The writing was all over the place, many things were just without subtext and without explanation, too much emphasis on the personal melodrama and the relationships instead of the world development. But it didn't escape me that the world itself has a lot of layers and was very complex with a lot of potential. However, the writers could not show this rich world in proper way and were constantly pushing drama and cheap tricks to keep viewer's interest.

The second season opened the same, but got more interesting after few episodes. And the second half was quite thrilling with a lot of things happening everywhere and the world was more exposed and put on the foreground. This is how you need to write the show - you show the world, place the characters in it and we watch what do they do. Bad writing is to focus on the characters only and relationships between them, while the world is somewhere there. This mistake was very visible in the House of the Dragon, in which we only had relationships and almost none of the world around. And I can also mention The Rings of Power, which was such a storytelling mess it made everyone in the show completely insufferable.

I do have few things to say: Some actors in key roles could've been selected better. The actor that plays Lan is just not good in general and has absolutely no chemistry with Moiraine. The only thing that saves him is that Rosamund Pike is such an incredible actress she is pulling him by the hair. Don't think she is appreciated enough in the industry, she is very, very good at what she does.

Same goes for the actress that plays Nynaeve. Beyond her unique incompetence as an actress, she actually manages to ruin everyone else with whom she participates in the scene. I just see that any character that gets in the scene with her just drops in IQ and in acting abilities. It's quite amazing to watch, for me she is the most annoying character in the show by far. And it's a shame since it's clear that she has a major role to play in the story. At least the actress that plays Egwene got much better, because she was very much like Nynaeve most of the time. And also Rand is no more a dumbass.

Addition of both Elayne and Lanfear to the cast was done very well and I liked both characters from the start. Hope they get more screen time and more impact in the story. Others are good enough and there has been a big improvement for everyone else since the first season, both in acting and in the story and character's arc.

So I will expect third season, it's getting better.

I will not stand for the Lan hate, the problem is the storyline which doesn't make Moiraine or Lan's characters look good at all. They dragged out the conflict between them for too long. Also, Alanna and her warders got too much screentime. I don't understand the Nynaeve critique at all. If you have read the books, the show's portrayal is quite true to her characterisation in the books. S2E3 was really one of the best episodes in the show. If you don't like Nynaeve now then you might not like her ever then. I personally am okay with the casting of the show, and we are getting really good actresses to play some really important supporting characters next season as well.
