Discuss The Witcher

The first season was quite good, I liked the intro to the characters and I liked the stories. There was something very intriguing and mysterious in the world that was created in this show. And the characters were nicely approached and established, the stakes were clear. Maybe I expected too much from season 2, even same level of storytelling as the first season would suffice, but unfortunately second season is disappointing and a letdown.

The level of energy is not the same anymore, the stories are more incoherent and meaningless, the forced melodrama is completely unnecessary, the emphasis on the Ciri as the most valuable person in the world is ridiculous, the main villain of the season is not satisfying and uninspiring and all the political games and schemes are quite pathetic and not plausible. The season comes as unfocused and sloppy written, the actors are trying to follow their lines but they struggle to express the weak writing into coherent behavior. Anya is still lovely though. Her Yennefer is still one of the best female characters in the recent years in sci-fi and fantasy genre and she is very good in that role, despite illogical and dumb writing. And Freya is doing well as Ciri. A lot of shows fall over incompetent actors that were giving center roles, but Freya is not bad and manages to hold her character without being annoying and without overacting. And of course Henry is a natural Geralt, he is still the same as in season 1, only with sillier lines.

The second half of the season is better and things improve. The pace becomes faster, the internal logic of the plot improves and there is finally a point to all this mess, but it's still not as good as it could've been. The season is not a complete waste of time, it was still enjoyable to watch and I am sure the fans will still like it. It still feels like a preparation for a bigger season to come, but the writing needs to improve since the story will become even more complicated.

Do you base that on other media (game/book?), because as a person without exposure to those, I can say it makes perfect sense. In the first season the choice to focus on this Witcher, as opposed to any of the others, who can be equally interesting/powerful seemed random. Now it gets form, as a protector's purpose is always to shield someone / people / things that are more important then themselves. And it's cemented in season 2 that Witchers are protectors: "We don't kill because of hate, but to save lives".

Ciri already displayed a disturbing level of uncontrolled raw power in the first season and now it sets up a good season 3 or more, where her fate and her moral compass will be in constant conflict. With emiotionally repressed (yet, emotionally intelligent) Witcher and emotionally scarred Yennefer as her mentors, you have quite a nice storyline setup.

Poor Netflix. Series destroyed. Season 2 is in all aspects maximum: average. And this is what former fan of the series says. Unfortunately, many producers go for quantity over quality.Except HBO, HULU and Apple.
