I have heard some complaints that the show appears to be all over the place with timelines and other characters that seem irrelevant but as a huge fan of the games, trust me, these characters are indeed relevant. The show is doing an excellent job of keeping themes of the game intact and no gamer can say that this is a complete abandonment of the game's characters and themes. In fact, it does a pretty good job of invoking them. For all not familiar with the books or games I implore you to have a little patience as it will come together. Well, I think anyways since I haven't finished the whole thing but I am pretty sure I can see where they are going with it.
