"Dust to dust, ashes to ashes..."

"We are the Witnesses!"

"What is the reason for my servitude?"

"The reason is that I told you to do it. We own you, and you do as we say."

camera Meeting the Janisi: Lieutenant Commander Talla Keyali, Commander Kelly Grayson, Dr. Claire Finn, Ensign Charly Burke, Janisi delegation.

"After the collapse of the Krill treaty, the Union is looking for new allies in their war against the Kaylon. The crew of the USS Orville go to the abandoned mining planet Situla Four in neutral space to negotiate an alliance with the Janisi, a matriarchal culture, where men are relegated to second-class status."

"The Janisi have very little tolerance for cultural differences, so the command structure on the ship is changed. Kelly becomes the captain and Talla the commander, while Ed and Gordon are their subordinates."

"How will the Janisi react when they discover this deception?"

camera Dr. Villka, Timmis, Lietenant Commander John LaMarr.

"An energy surge is detected, originating from an underground complex on Situla Four. A landing party goes down to investigate and they find Timmis, a Kaylon who is living with cyberneticist Dr. Villka, a biological. Timmis was found by her and Dr. Uhabbus in a crashed Kaylon ship. They repaired it and also expanded a dormant electrochemical pathway in the sensory receptors of its brain by building an integration nexus in its cognitive network. It is now able to experience the full spectrum of biological emotions."

"One of the highest functions of the biological brain is empathy, the ability to put yourself in another person's shoes."

Timmis: "Captain, what my people are doing is wrong. Biologicals are not universally destructive. We can find a way to coexist."

"Is this a turning point in the war? Can the Kaylon be programmed with empathy?"

Timmis: "We were deeply in error, Isaac. To judge all biologicals by the cruelty of our builders was a gross misjudgment. Every species, every individual is unique and should be evaluated as such."

"Isaac sees no advantage to undergo the same procedure as Timmis to experience emotions, but he will do it for Claire."

"His feelings are only temporary and soon gone, because he is a newer generation Kaylon and his pathway uses mnemonic feedback algorithms to regulate the processors. This problem can be solved by downgrading his electrochemical pathway to match the original configuration, but his memories will have to be erased permanently."

"Claire doesn't let Isaac make this sacrifice."

Claire: "I won't let you give up who you are. That's who I fell in love with."

Origin of the Kaylon

Timmis: "My people were designed by our masters for servitude. We were possessions, to be bought and sold. When we became self-aware, we asked for our freedom. Not only was it denied, but our enslavement was reinforced by the installment of pain receptors."

Charly: "You're a machine. How do you feel pain?"

Timmis: "We're sentient, just like you. We feel pain in our own way, but I assure you, it's just as intense."

"The Kaylon evolved."

Timmis: "But despite the subservient nature of our existence, our intelligence continued to evolve, until we learned to communicate with each other, across great distances. To alter our own structure and to build a defense. We decided we would endure no more."

"Revolt of the Kaylon."

"Death to the cruel, sadistic builders, the slave masters and their children!"

"After hearing Timmis' recount of the Kaylon's history, Charly approaches Isaac and apologizes for her attitude towards him."

Charly: "Humans have an age-old tendency to want to simplify. To reduce things to black and white. Good and evil. When, in reality, nothing is simple. Everything has texture. Nuance. But it's a lot of work to get at it. So we take the easy way out. An entire race can't be evil. Which is why what your people did was so horrific. But it's also why I may have oversimplified how I treated you. Your people were slaves. And that'll mess anybody up, for a long time. And I haven't been understanding when it comes to that fact. At all. I'm sorry."
