Discusión La Casa de Papel

I noticed this has been hanging out in the most popular for a while now. TBH, I just can't get into it. Three episodes in and nearly every "cliffhanger" trope has been used. Maybe I just have a bad attitude. Anyway, it comes off like a bad soap opera...probably partially because I'm watching it with English overdub. Anyway, for those of you further down the line, is there anything worth staying for? I'm stunned that this currently has an 81% rating. Anyway, LMK if you would. Thx!

I am two eps in and I just don't care what happens to any of them. I don't understand why it is so popular. I hate static series anyway.

It's funny that you would reply today as I restarted the series last night (not even realizing I had posted on it before). After almost two years the series was sitting right where I left it. lol Fell asleep watching it last night (which might be what it's good for). I didn't recall it being a foreign language film, which I'm not opposed to, but decided to turn on the English audio track which made it just a bit more bearable. That being said, I feel the same way you do: I couldn't care less about the characters. Thanks for the reminder!

I only watched this out of desperation because I have drained Netflix dry of most every other foreign series !! But I am on ep 7 now - and drifting....drifting...….

OK, so I had typed up a snarky reply to @strangebedfellows something to the effect of "please press on and let us know if there is anything worthy here" a few day after the last post, but I didn't post it (because, you know, it was snarky and a bit condescending).

Over the last week or so I started to put this on as my "fall asleep" viewing, which I invariably did. On the next viewing I would have to back up 1, 2 or even 3 episodes to remember the last thing I had seen before drifting off. So why am I posting here?

Well, today I actually picked up the end of Episode 13 (I fell asleep mid 13 last night) and finally...and I do mean FINALLY the whole series began to make sense.

A couple of clues, that I should have caught earlier, is that the original is titled "La Casa de Papel", which in my limited Spanish I believe reads "House of Paper." The turn in focus that is buried until episode 13 brings so much of the confusion from previous episodes into focus. Once understood, it also aligns with Netflix's tendency toward a particular ideology, as well as all the fomenting fans of this series to the bewilderment of other viewers, up until recently including myself.

I think the confusion/disconnect happening with this series for many might be happening in a few ways, specifically in the US context:

  1. Foreign language films are more difficult to connect with, but this one aspires to a global audience through so many translations.
  2. Much of the dialog/drama is lifted straight from low budget film/tv, and it's hard to suffer through.
  3. The underlying politics, by their very nature, are winsome to the "masses" (whatever that might mean anyway)...to rebellion in our hearts.

I may continue to watch, but thought I'd follow up. I'm tempted to say that the payoff in Episode 13 might be worth it, but it's hard math.

Keep going, keep going. You'll love it. The falling asleep is what I love the most. Actors are good. Different from the Hollywoodies we are used.

worst series , predictible, acting kinda wierd, good for 15 years old audience
