The summer of 1986 begins on a promising note for Erfurt sisters Catrin and Maja Streesemann – they’ve finally received a travel permit for their first holiday at Lake Balaton. The only thing is, they have no idea that they’re being watched by the Stasi as the spies in swimming trunks of the Balaton Brigade have been watching out for East Germans attempting to escape to the West, with the holiday resort as a starting point. Catrin is quick to make new friends at the campsite, especially winsome Rudi from Mühlhausen, whose overtures clearly aim for more than just friendship; younger Maja is magically attracted to the glamour of the elegant Balaton-Residenz luxury hotel where only Western tourists are allowed to stay. Fate leads them not only into the Balaton-Residenz, but also to Tamás, the Hungarian hotel boss. Catrin immediately falls for the charming Hungarian, but Maja is the one to steal a kiss from him at the first opportunity, casting a shadow on the sisters’ otherwise close relationship. And the next disaster comes along, as their mother Kirsten has every reason to believe that her daughters’ trip to Hungary could wreak havoc on the family after an ominous phone call from Hungary. Using a pretext, she persuades her husband Karl to start the Trabant and drive after Maja and Catrin.

Draamasarja Kesä Balatoilla (Honigfrauen) käsittelee Saksojen kahtiajakoa vielä viattomien nuorten itäsaksalaisnaisten näkökulmasta. On vuosi 1986. Sisarukset Maja ja Catrin saavat kinuttua vanhemmiltaan luvan lähteä kesälomareissulle kahdestaan. Vaikka itäsaksalaisten vapautta liikkua rajoitettiin tiukasti, pääsivät hekin ulkomaille lomanviettoon. Balaton-järven rantakohde Unkarissa oli luvallinen ja erityisesti nuorten suosima lomakohde. Balatonilla saattoi myös kohdata ihmisiä rautaesiripun toiselta puolelta. Sisarusten kesä on täynnä aurinkoa, ihastumisia ja uusia kokemuksia, joista kaikki eivät kuitenkaan ole vain hyvästä.

Die Geschichte zweier Schwestern aus der DDR, Maja und Catrin, die sich im Sommer 1986 voller Vorfreude und Erwartungen, auf den Weg machen zum ungarischen Plattensee. Dorthin, wo bereits vor der Wende Ost- und Westdeutsche Seite an Seite den Sommer genießen. Und die Geschichte ihrer Mutter, die ein dunkles Geheimnis dazu bewegt, ihren Töchtern hinterher zu reisen, um das Ärgste zu verhindern. Nicht ahnend, dass es noch viel schlimmer kommen soll.

Denn die Einsätze sind hoch. Schon allein, weil die DDR-Staatssicherheit mit ihrer "Balaton-Brigade" vor Ort mit Spitzeln in Badehose aufpasst, dass die Fluchtversuche in den Westen nicht überhandnehmen. Für Maja und Catrin,dargestellt von Cornelia Gröschel und Sonja Gerhardt, wird das beste Haus am Platz, ein Hotel für Westler, schon bald zum verbotenen Sehnsuchtsort mit magischer Anziehungskraft. Was mit zwei unschuldigen Urlaubsflirts beginnt, wird zu einer Zerreißprobe für die Schwestern. Und am Ende zu einer Entscheidung, auf welcher Seite sie stehen – politisch wie emotional.
