Discuss The Handmaid's Tale

Like you can suddenly freeze all female bank accounts ( most banks are multinational, and we already know that we that people were trying to flee to canada suggesting that the problem is directly located in america) suddenly rabble can overtake the military.. ok the rest of the world stands by and lets this happen? ..ok

maybe some of these things will eventually be explained but somehow i doubt it

I've started watching season 2 and I am starting to see the way the government was taken over to be less and less likely. I simply don't see enough men going along with the new government. I mean would the military actually back up a bunch of terrorists who took over the government?

I also think race would play a big part. After all I don't recall many of the "commanders" being non-white guys. I think most blacks and hispanics would see this new government as basically Alt Right type guys who are looking to take all their black and hispanic women away so that only the new white male government gets to have sex with them and impregnate them. This new government would die in its infancy unless they're using magic.

Some would say it's very feasible. An executive order here an executive order there. A couple of fanatical Supreme Court Justices. A few more "yes men" in key positions. A rabid base that would follow you right over a cliff...no questions asked.

Coups happen all over the world, all the time, sometimes in country's where people 'thought' they were free. As soon as Martial Law is declared because of some 'emergency' ALL the other protections we would normally have are suspended. A strong independent Judiciary can help but if that is corrupted we are sunk and then justice is delayed anyway. Every country deals with Saudi Arabia right now even though women have few rights in that country. Sure, you can resist with your firearms, but that would be picking a fight with Mike Tyson: a novice vs a pro, you won't win.

I'm having this same basic discussion in another thread. The difference between those other countries and the United States is that the citizens of the United States have nearly unfettered access to guns. A coup would have a hard time maintaining control with a well armed populous.

Don't get me wrong, people WILL resist. They are resisting right now even in Gilead, even without arms. However, if you have spent a few years at your current job (whatever you do) you will know that you have a distinct advantage over Joe public who is coming into your office for the first time today. That's reality.

Sure, but the newcomers at my job aren't threatening to take away my fertile wife/girlfriend/daughter to rape-mate with. Good luck finding people to work at that job.
