Discuss The Good Fight

...and if so, is it any good? THE GOOD WIFE was a show which I always enjoyed. And Diane Lockhart is an interesting character. Dunno if she could take the step up to leading role though.

Let me write something to your last sentence first: Some of the advertising regarding the show and/or media coverage is a bit misleading, because Christine Baranski's Diane Lockhart is one of three leads in this show - not the leading role. There are two other characters, Lucca Quinn (played by Cush Jumbo, you might remember her from TGW season 7), and Maia Rindell (played by Leslie Rose, a new character), who have their own story arcs and an equal amount of screen time (my estimation), which is different from TGW in which Alicia was the main character and pretty much everyting/everyone revolved around her (much more so in the later seasons). I can't say it's better or worse, but it's definitely different.

About your first and main question: It's hard to answer if it's any good, because it depends on what you liked most about TGW? You won't find many references to Alicia, for example - that's something left in the past. You will see a lot of guest stars and characters again (Elsbeth Tascioni, Mike Kresteva, Marissa Gold, Kurt McVeigh, Colin Sweeney, many Judges) that you probably enjoyed on TGW; there are also actually similar story lines about Grand Juries, or freaky tech gadgets, or an old name partner coming back and causing havoc. It can be fresh and new, but it could also be repetitive and boring - that depends on what you remember from TGW and what you liked about it.

Personally, I think it's alright. Without spoiling anything, for me it's not as good as season 1&2 of TGW (my favourites), but it's better than the awful season 6. It has similar flaws (bad character development, boring side storylines) and some of the strengths (interesting cases, humour) of TGW, but it's not a show I think about days afterwards because it was that thrilling. It's a good show, but there are better one's out there.

Best wishes,

That's interesting. Just assumed she was the lead. Cush Jumbo is terrific. Loved her in THE GOOD WIFE. Just hope she doesn't cross the line over to being obnoxious. I absolutely loved the guest stars. I think it was, arguably, the strongest element of THE GOOD WIFE. Elsbeth Tascioni is a legendary character. I'd like to think it could, but doubt it will, reach the dramatic heights of THE GOOD WIFE (peaking at the beginning of season 5) which was some great TV. Thanks Janar, it sounds good to me!

Yes, she is a great actress! If you ask me, it's a bit hit and miss with her character in TGF. I just watched episode 9 and she's fantastic in this one; but her story line with her new "love interest" played by Justin Bartha was very boring so far and forgettable, unfortunately.

Oh, then you're in for a treat! Elsbeth was in 3 episodes and she is/was - in my opinion - the best thing about the spinoff. Not too much, the exact amount of screen time to enjoy. I liked it a lot ...

No, it's far from those dramatic heights, yet. It's enjoyable most of the time for me, but it's in parts hard to feel with some of the characters for reasons that are hard to describe without giving away anything. You just have to watch for yourself.

I'm curious what you think after watching! If you want, just share your thoughts; I think I'll be around here for some time. slight_smile

Many thanks Janar. That was extremely helpful info. I'm definitely sticking with it- just for the positive Elspeth feedback alone!

I have watched four episodes (her in UK) and I am not enjoying it. The new characters and stories are just meh. Delroy Lindo is giving me a a headache with his 'acting' skills. The other woman is not much better either.

I think they need different actors. I like Cush Jumbo, the investigator, Merissa (from the good wife), but that's about it. They need to improve immensely to keep me.
