Discuss Travelers

If you haven't watched Episode 201 then look away ... you've been warned.

Well now we know who was behind the abduction of MacLaren's team back in Season 1. And it wasn't the mysterious Faction. What does this guy Vincent want, beyond his own survival? What was he trying to accomplish taking the team prisoner and questioning them? Maybe the Director would order his son taken out if it became aware of his existence. After all, the Travelers aren't supposed to have children in the past and this one shouldn't have survived to try. Protecting his only child from assassination would be a powerful motivator. Traveler 001, the very first of them. Interesting. I also wondered what sort of disease he had in the future that doesn't yet exist. A bioweapon of some kind?

It was cool to see Amanda Tapping show up as the psychiatrist who got an earful. Wonder what her role is going to be? It's probably a good thing for her sake that she didn't answer that call on her cell - it could have been a major headache (pun intended). Building a failsafe into the quantum computer so it would self-destruct if an unauthorized person activated it, then taking all the hosts who were about to get blown up does seem like something an AI might do to get around its ethical constraints. It had to stop the government investigating its Travelers but couldn't simply have all the agents killed - unless of course they were about to die. As Philip noted, morally very questionable. We don't yet know exactly which side won the power struggle in the future. Maybe it was the Faction, or maybe the Director has become the bad guy because of changes in the timeline. I'm looking forward to seeing how this all plays out.

I finally got around to seeing the first episode and was confused beyond confusion. This Vincent guy...his host survived September 11, but it was supposed to be the other guy...the guy whose office it was and whose computer was freezing up? How did that get messed up?

The executive who was supposed to be sitting there got up at the last moment and Vincent the tech support guy sat down in his chair just moments before the traveler arrived. He happened to be occupying the other guy's exact spot at exactly the right moment in time. We know there are hazards to the transfer process. Sometimes they misfire, or for whatever reason there's a shift in the timeline and the person doesn't do what they were supposed to do. In those cases the arriving consciousness is lost. So when they strap in (or whatever it is they do in the future before they're sent) there's a chance they won't wake up anywhere when the switch is thrown, they'll just die. Vincent's traveler got really lucky.
