הסדרה מספרת את סיפורם של אנשי צוות החללית דיסקברי של צי החלל, 10 שנים לפני הסיפור המתרחש בסדרה המקורית. דמותה הראשית הפעם תהיה של לוטננט ולא של קפטן החללית. הסדרה החדשה תהיה סדרת "מסע בין כוכבים" הראשונה בטלוויזיה, מאז שסדרת הפריקוול "מסע בין כוכבים: אנטרפרייז" הגיעה לסיומה בשנת 2005.
