Some interesting stuff from the guy whose version of DIS many seem to think would have been so much better.
Summary article (Mainly VOY and DS9): https://www.denofgeek.com/tv/star-trek-voyager-bryan-fuller-behind-the-scenes/
Full podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/bryan-fuller/id1204949508?i=1000385756562 (if you have over an hour to spare)
Not listened to the podcast (for things like that I'm a reader rather than a listener/viewer), but it seems as if he wanted to work on DS9 rather than VOY - so all wasn't roses even pre-Kelvin. Though it might have been a case of "the grass is always greener", I guess.
I love this quote, though:
“Conservatives like Star Trek for a reason that is different than the way liberals like Star Trek,” he noted. “And that’s fascinating, because I feel like conservatives like the ‘quasi-fascist military regime’ where everybody’s behaving and there’s no wild expressions of personality that couldn’t be quantified by science. And liberals love the inclusivity and hope for the future that we’re all going to get along and accept each other’s differences and celebrate them, and everybody has a place on one of those ships.”
Linked article (from 2017, more about DIS): https://ew.com/tv/2017/07/28/bryan-fuller-star-trek-discovery/
Mentioned in the comments (also from 2017, on the Klingon redesign): https://ew.com/comic-con/2017/07/17/star-trek-discovery-klingons-photo/
Sounds as if he was understandably miffed at losing the gig, and not that impressed by the trailer (the two could be linked ) but it's interesting to read that some parts of the show that were much criticised were put in place by Fuller. Those women (who weren't even white) in charge, Sonequa Martin-Green's casting and even the new-look Klingons all seem to be from Fuller's time in charge.
EDIT: Forgot to point out that it seems to be him rather than Kurtzman that went over budget on the pilot.
Judging from the comments sections plus ça change...

Fuller was no longer in charge when STD went into actual production he was only involved in the pre-production but he was forced out by Kurtzman and Secret Hideout and the story of STD would have actually played out differently he has told his synopsis for the show on many live interviews including with Midnight's Edge and Robert Meyer Burnett (who knows Fuller personally and professionally)And if Fuller had stayed we would actually have someone in charge who knew Trek abnd worked on Star Trek in the past that's the difference. Also there is also an odd relation between Kurtzman and Fuller .Fuller was heading Star Trek Discovery ,Kurtzman takes over Fuller is head of the NBC Hannibal series and at the moment when Fuller starts talks with the IP holders of Silence Of The Lambs and Clarice Starling to incorporate her in Hannibal ,Kurtzman suddenly gets to do a Clarice series.🤔

Alex Kurtzman has gone on record as saying he was responsible for just about every little detail on STD, after both his Dark Universe and related Mummy reboot for Universal failed.
