Discuss Star Trek: Discovery

That way they could bypass subspace communication relays and other means of detection to bring about the reunification of their peoples.

Seems like the Vulcans missed out on that neat trick to communicate in real time over large distances without detection.

Could make for all sorts of counter-intelligence and double agent stories too!

Please don't encourage them.

For such communication via katra to be effective, doesn't one of the parties need to be at death's doorstep?

Nah, Michael was just having her monthlies in the pilot episode which led to Sarek appearing and so any noticeable surge of concern or distress seems to be a way to have your katra contact its other components. I don't know how many humans have had a part of the katra put into their mind (Bones apparently got the lot for a while before giving it back) but some well disciplined Vulcans who can control their emotions well should be able to use it effectively.
