Nigel is much better!

But er.. seriously, what a lame idea it was. Michael? A woman? Meh. It's like reverse political correctness. "Hey, let's give a woman a man's name! "

Whatever. weary

I tend to agree. Although that was far, FAR from the worst part of the show.

Most of Bryan Fuller's lead female character's have typically male names. He did it with Dead Like Me, Wonderfalls and now Star Trek.

Although, I have personally known a female Michael so it's not that weird.

This discussion is ongoing on The Movie Chat board. I did a quick google search. Michael is not unknown as a woman's name. One site listed it as the 799th out of 49 hundres or so woman's names. In addition at least two actresses have the name Michael: Michael Learned and Michael Michele.

Don't forget that given names have "changed gender" over time. "Evelyn" used to be masculine, in the case of "Evelyn Waugh." "Sasha," an East European boy's name, is becoming a girl's name, which would make Tchaikovsky's "Peter and the Wolf" interesting over time. Then there's Shel Silverstein's song, "A Boy Named Sue," and the playful "My Girl Bill."

I, for one, am not a fan of the androgynous names that mothers have been giving their daughters of late. Although older, more familiar ones like Morgan are just fine.

Morgan Freeman thanks you. grinning

Travis: I tried posting a poem in another thread, and the auto-formatting stuff really made it basically impossible. Something else to look into, I guess. When I put 4 line groups (stanzas) with a blank line separating them, it ran the 4 lines together into one. Using "quote" etc didn't really help. Maybe some kind of "leave it alone" code would be the easiest solution.

How about...? Daryl Taylor Tyler Stevie Sam Alex, etc.

I'm sure you have a problem with all those too.

I've met many females in my life with so called traditionally male names. And the reverse. Marion, Leslie, Joscelyn...all males.

I guess it's up to the parents as to what name they give their child. Everything isn't about PC.

The last female I met with a traditional male name was named...Fred. Given to her by her father. He had four daughters that all had a traditional male name. And all beginning with the letter "F". Yeah, parents do that too.

I have a problem with the term "actress".

Like why can't a woman just be known as a female actor if they must bring gender in it? Quite archaic in my opinion.

Isn't it the only profession that still does that?

Masseur and Masseuse?

Waiter and Waitress?

Dominator and Dominatrix?

Those are equally archaic.

Massage Therapist.

Wait Staff will suffice.

As for dominator...gender should not matter. The act of domination doesn't give a crap about gender.

I think a lot of women - and men too - like the word "dominatrix" too much to give it up.

Okay. You've got a point. We can keep that one.

Threads like these always make me laugh. "I understand teleportation might some day happen but they are stretching reality by giving a woman what is (in my sheltered opinion) a man's name."

I know the OP is joking but there are really idiots like this who will be the end of human creativity by getting everything dumbed down to the point that we eventually live in the world depicted by Idiocracy.

"mothers have been giving their daughters"

Are you sure about that?

Like fathers couldn't possibly have anything to do with it.
