During Jessica's tape when they're in the guidance counselor's office I'm pretty sure Hannah alludes to the fact that the guidance counselor is replaced by Derek Luke's character (the name is escaping me) and she says 'we'll get to him later.'
Interestingly enough, she finishes the first 12 tapes before the guidance counselor makes the list, right? She says after the 12th tape she felt like giving it another go. And then she goes to the guidance counselor who seems to not care as much as Hannah wants him to. But if this is the case, how is she able to foreshadow him way back on tape 2? Did I miss something?

From what I understand she made tapes 1-12 after the majority of everything happened. So, she recorded them only in the week leading up to her going in to talk to the Derek counselor and later killing herself the same day. So he was already long in place by the time she made the tapes. She wasn't making them while all the events happened.....her decision to kill herself was after the whirpool rape with Bryce. She did the tapes that week, reflecting back on everything that had happened in chronological order. Then she went in to talk to the counselor as her final possible reason to live, but he let her down (which she recorded, making tape 13) so that night she killed herself.

Yes, I understand that she made them all pretty much at once. And she felt somewhat better after she got everything off her chest so she decided to give everything a shot one more time by going to Derek Luke. However, Derek really didn't do anything wrong until that last day after everything was already recorded. But she already alluded to Derek Luke in tape 2. But nothing that she recorded up until that point would indicate he did anything wrong until tape 13. That's why I thought it was an inconsistency, unless I'm thinking things through incorrectly.

OHH okay sorry, I misread your initial post. Good point. You're right. Hmm. That might indeed be a plot inconsistency! Unless she just had a general vibe that he was insufficient but...you're right. I can't think of anything before tape 13 that obviously showed (to her) that he wasn't helpful. I'd have to watch it again to look for that (but I'm not going to do that lol). Unless just the fact lots of random bad things were going on unnoticed....?

There was one interaction he had with her which I thought about after I made this post; she met with him about her future because her grades were slipping. She said she wanted to go to NYU or Columbia despite this and the fact that she hadn't taken the SATs yet. He reasonably told her she might want to set the bar a little lower.
Either way, not a big deal. Just something I thought about..

Yeah that's true. Instead of really finding out more why her grades were dropping or encouraging her to go for her dreams, he basically was just like 'nah community college'
