I'm at S02 E02... the guys dress up like the Ghostbusters and go to school to discover that no one else dressed up in a Halloween costume?
Did anyone do this at any of your schools? I just ask because this didn't happen at my school, not even grade schools. Anyway, I was just wondering why they were surprised by it.

They had Halloween dress-up day for us in elementary school, but not at the middle or high schools. I do remember hearing about another local high school that stopped doing it because a kid showed up in a Jason Voorhees costume with an actual machete and got into a fight with another student - didn't use the machete or threaten him with it, but one of the parents complained and that was that.
The kids in the show were surprised because everyone had dressed up the year before. Being a little off in their own world, I get the impression they just weren't paying attention to the fact that costume day wasn't being promoted this year.

It happened at my school during grades k-6...but after sixth grade, no one would be caught dead dressing up. I'm not even sure it would have been allowed to happen.

Yeah. It works okay in elementary school, but older kids are either going to think it's lame or purposely wear inappropriate costumes. So nobody does it.

Some people dress up at work and when I was in college, but I don't remember doing it in high school or middle school.

The rich girls who wanted attention would dress up in high school. Some of the younger teachers would dress up.
But it wasn't a big thing in the 80s.

Every year in elementary school the majority of kids would dress up. We'd even have a parade around the playground. Absolutely no one dressed up in jr high. But then in high school there would be 5 to 10 kids who would do something. I was class of 87. Halloween was going through the poison panic at the time and it was all changing. I kind of got that feel from the sudden change the kids were surprised by.

We did. Even had Halloween Costume Contests in school. I graduated in 87. My brothers and I always won those contests (when we entered them) as we were lucky to have a grandmother that worked as a professional movie makeup artist. So our costumes were always film ready (with each of us spending around 4 hours in her makeup chair before heading off to school on Halloween). In High School, I remember once dressing up as Teen Wolf (complete with a face full of spirit gum set hair), and was invited by the Cheerleaders to the field during a game that played that night to cheer with them. It was a lot of fun. In Junior High, I came once as a zombie that absolutely freaked out both classmates and teachers as I shuffled down the hall (I could see them actively changing direction to another hall as I came closer to them).

Yes we had Halloween costume day in middle school. That would have been around 1980.

I wore a costume to school for Halloween every year I was in school in the 80s. The majority of kids did. Even when we got "too cool" for Halloween, we all wore ninja outfits. Lol.
Even in the 90s in high school, people still came to school in costume....
